A buzzbait will often outproduce a popper for the simple reason that it covers the ground far more quickly.

If your pond consists of clear water, that would be another plus for the buzzbait, which gives bass less chance to scrutinize.

Yet another benefit of the buzzer is that it that it takes passive bass through reflex reaction, whereas a popper is not a reaction bait.

Okay, there's one more advantage, the buzzer is normally more weedless than a popper.

When I say buzzbait I would include any steadily moving topwater that makes a commotion, it doesn't need propellers.

I guess the surest way to find out it to give your favorite buzzbait a shot

Most pros will use a popper more often than a buzzbait because of the simple fact a popper is a finesse bait.  You can literally coax inactive fish to smash a popper whereas a buzzbait just passes over and if they are reluctant or non-aggressive you wont get bit.  You can chug a popper, it can be walked, it can be stopped and started or a constant popping retrieve.  I prefer to have a constant popping and walking retrieve most days.  It will outproduce and just flat out out fish a buzzbait day in and day out.  A buzzbait is more for novice topwater fishermen that doesnt want to put much thought into their cadence.  Just throw it out and reel it back.  A lot of die-hard jig fisherman will throw this when conditions dictate a topwater bite.

Most recent night fishing trip at a local pond:

Black Buzzbait- 3 2-2 1/2 pound bass

Black popper- 1 dink bass and a bluegill

Around here a buzzbait works better overall than a popper. It also seems to catch more quality bass. You will just have to try out both and see which one works better overall for you.
