I am planning on buying a baitcast setup for frogging in the spring/summer. Any suggestions on rods+reels? $150 range or less for rod and for reel.I am leaning towards the dobyns fury magheavy flippin stick and the bps pq2. I'm not brand specific just has to be a flippin stick 7'-7'3 and a reel thats solid, has at leas 6:1 GR, and preferably the simpler to operate the better.

some other reels i would consider

-h20 mettle (is the gen 2 as good as the first?)

-Abu orra sx

-shimano caenan

If you have a MH, you can probably get away with throwing frogs on that. I have a heavily covered local pond I fish (wall to wall lily pads), and I haven’t had an issue throwing the frog on a MH. Disclaimer - the biggest bass I’ve caught there was just a little over 2lbs. Don’t know how it would do with a bigger girl.

Second the MH rod. I like a 7' one that has a soft tip, and locks down up high. I like a reel with a larger spool for frogs, with really long casts and heavy braid, you can get close to the spool on smaller ones.

A lot of flipping sticks aren't going to be good frogging rods. You need something that has a soft tip so it loads well when you're casting. A good portion of flipping sticks are meat sticks that have a pretty fast tip that doesn't load well.

The best frogging rod I've ever owned is the one I have now, it's a 7' 3" H/F Ethos Micro from Academy. It loads great, walks a frog perfectly, and has enough backbone to winch them out. Plus, I spent $50 on one and $27 on the other. I have a Pflueger Supreme XT 7.3:1 baitcaster on mine. Super nice frogging combo for $130 :)

I'm assuming you're referring to the hollow body double hook frogs. If so, do yourself a favor and get a heavy power, fast action rod. My favorites are a Dobyns champ XP 735 and an og Tatula 7' 4" H/F frog rod. For reels I like the Tatula 200hd and a Lew's suer duty. Both with 50lb braid, power pro or 832. My favorite thing about these combos is that they double as jig, pitching, swimjig and even C-rig applications.

I guess it depends on what kind of froggin you're doing but if you're in the heavy stuff and wanting to haul out some big girls I can't imagine it gets any better than the Tatula Frogging Rod....TAT741HFB.  It's light, will throw a HBF a mile and, most importantly, won't let you down when the fighting gets heavy.  As far as the reel....Buy the FASTEST quality reel you can.    Put some 45 lb Power Pro on it and get ready for some fun

I'm more on the H/F side of things for rods myself. I use a 7'6" H/F Abu Garcia Vendetta 2.0 rod. It's a pool cue, but I can still cast accurately and BOMB hollow body frogs with it. Plus I fish from a kayak and in crazy thick lilypads. I like the extra power to horse fish out and to get a solid hookset because with this type of fishing often times I am moving more than the fish during a fight and it might have me wrapped around 10 lilypad stems the thickness of your pinky finger. I think most important reel quality is going to be drag, followed closely by speed. A lot of times when I'm sitting in lilypads I'll see movement somewhere else and I need to bring my frog back ASAP to make that other cast.

I personally use a 7'4" st croix avid x h/f rod with a curado I 7.5.1 reel. I know rod power ratings are subjective but medium heavy is too light of option for my liking.

My froggin' outfit cost about $150 and it's been a joy to fish with. 7' H/F Irod Fiber paired with a Daiwa Laguna 7.1:1

If I were you I'd definitely be checking dobyns website for a refurbished fr735c. You can save yourself a few bucks going that route.

As for a reel... A Tatula CT? I say that with a "?" because I see that one on sale quite a bit and recommended here as well. I've never used one myself. This reel also puts you slightly out of budget.

I have a 7-3 Heavy/fast Abu Garcia Veritas with a Lew's Tournament Pro  Speed G reel with a 7:5.1 gear ratio.  65# PowerPro braid.  Love it.

I use it for my 110 Whopper Ploppers and bigger spin baits too.

I like mh rods, but St. Croix, which is different. That rod you speak of is sweet, my buddy has one and uses it for the same purpose.
