Super User Jig Man Posted May 31, 2007 Super User Posted May 31, 2007 If any of you guys are running 2 I would like to ask you some questions. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 31, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 31, 2007 What units do you have? Do you have them networked? How are the antennas set up? Is either one of them color? Anything else which you think is valuable. Quote
acar555 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 I have run 2 different brands for a while (Humminbird and Lowrance) so I had to have them set up indepent of each other. I now have 2 Humminbirds a 787c2 and a 997c. Both are color units and the 997c has Side Imaging. The 997 is mounted at the console and the 787 runs thru my universal sonar in my Minn Kota trolling motor. I have them run thru a Humminbird Interlink to share waypoints and other information. I do have each unit using it's own gps antenna though. I wanted to have each units gps antenna as close to where the transducer is mounted as possible to give as little margin of error as possible when marking structure. But you could have them work off of 1 gps antenna. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 31, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 31, 2007 Right now I am running a Lowrance LMS 480 at the console. I use a hand held up front. I really want to be able to mark something from either location and have both units record it. I am thinking about a color unit for the front. I just don't have dual gps experience and none of my friends run them at all. Quote
acar555 Posted May 31, 2007 Posted May 31, 2007 It would be pretty simply for you to get another unit and connect the 2 together. There is one thing you should know though. Lowrance changed their Lowrancenet connectors for 2007 and if you purchased a 2007 unit you would need to get an adaptor to be able to plug you Lms-480 into a new network. You would probaly have to get the latest update installed to be able to use the new LGC-2000 gps antenna with your unit. If you could find a left over 2006 model, like an lms-332c, you wouldn't have to get any adptors as they have the same connectors. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted May 31, 2007 Author Super User Posted May 31, 2007 The one I have been looking at is the 522c I believe. Anyway it is the one with the external antenna. Quote
acar555 Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 The external model is the 520c and would be networkable with your lms-480, but you will need to use some adaptors to get the older blue network to work with the new red connectors. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 1, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 1, 2007 Lowrance must have a team of guys on staff to keep switching those colors around. No matter how often I make a switch, it seems like I am one color behind. I have heard it both ways and am still unclear; when a waypoint or icon is marked is it the antenna location or the transducer location that is the actual spot? Quote
IneedAnewScreenName9886691 Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 I run two Eagles the 642C up front (easier IMO to see in bright sunlight) and the 480 (B&W) on the dash. They are not networked. I recommend looking into these mounting plates for the external GPS receivers ( http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0013692018192a&navCount=4&podId=0013692&parentId=cat21402&masterpathid=&navAction=push&cmCat=MainCatcat602025-cat21402_TGP&catalogCode=IH&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat21402&hasJS=true ) When I was researching, the info I received was the external receivers were more accurate? So that is what I went with combined with the combo mount only available (so I was told) from Cabelas. good luck - the sonar/gps world really gave me a headache! Quote
acar555 Posted June 1, 2007 Posted June 1, 2007 All the gps info is in relation to the antenna. So if the transducer is 10 feet away from the antenna there is already a 10 ft margin of error when you set a waypoint. Approach that waypoint from the opposite direction and you could be 20+ feet away from where you originally marked it at and never really find that exact spot again. I would aviod those mounting plates as the unit can block reception of the gps signal especially if the unit is tilted up. The lowrance manual will tell you to try and get the antenna at least 3 ft away from the head unit as well. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 2, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 2, 2007 Yes I understand about the antenna. My 480 is on the console and the antenna is on top of the console only 6" away. I have some problems with that and would like to get an antenna up front with the second unit and its transducer on the tmotor and run them both from that antenna. I'm thinking about mounting it somewhere on the starboard gunwale. Quote
acar555 Posted June 2, 2007 Posted June 2, 2007 What you want to do whould work fine. I would go to Lowrance.com and get all available updates for that the Lms-480 will work with the new network and antenna. It will also let the units share waypoints. There have also been some updates for your lgc-2000 gps antenna that might help with your problems. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 3, 2007 Author Super User Posted June 3, 2007 Thanks. I hadn't even thought of that possibility. Quote
