Recommendation for a jig rod for jigs this size...

I have a rod for smaller jigs, but am also looking for something for jigs 1/2 and 3/4 oz.  There are a lot of MH rods that are rated up to 1 oz however when you add a 3/8 oz trailer to a 3/4 oz jig do you need to go to a Heavy rod?  Most heavy rods are rated to 1.5 oz and that may be overkill too.  Don’t know, and I think the answer varies by brand somewhat. 

 

Looking for recommendations on a $100-200 jig rod for jig/trailers as stated above.  What length, power, brand, model, etc?

I think you should get a heavy powered rod for sure. As far as specific rod, I'll let others comment.

My favorite rod that I own is my jig rod, a 7'2" HF Tatula. It's light, sensitive and is a true fast action with plenty of backbone. I almost exclusively use it for T-rigs and Jigs but I'd be comfortable frogging or light punching with it too. It can be found for the lower end of your budget too.

For jigs I mainly use two rods. One, like stated above, is a 7' 2" H/F og Tatula. Absolutely love this rod in light to moderate cover or docks with fluoro. The next one is a Dobyns Champion XP 735. This one is labeled MH/XF but performs like a true heavy fast imo. Great in the heavier stuff with braid.

I prefer a 7’2 Heavy fast action rod for jigs most of the time when fishing those weights, paired for 16-20lb florocarbon is the ticket for pending cover. Not sure your budget but my reccomendation would be a Megabass Orochi xx Perfect Pitch rod. Perfect rod in my opinion for pitching a jig, along with many other techniques.

It comes to no standards to use for a rod recommendation, it's up to each individual to make that decision.

Any light weight graphite jig/worm fast action rod with lure weight recommended between 1/4- 1 1/2 oz will work.

Several Dobyns 5 Power, Rated H

Several SC Avid X rated MH

long list available, my suggestion is go with a company with good customer service and warranty.

On top of the rod being able to handle casting and pitching your total weight you generally want some reserve power for setting the thick heavy hook on those jigs and handling the fish and whatever cover you’re in. 

 

Take a look around, some places have been offering deals on the Megabass Orochi XX rods, and the Perfect Pitch in that series has been often praised as a great 1/2 and 3/4 oz jig rod plus other presentations like frogs. I just got one but haven’t had a chance to fish it. But for a heavy powered or xheavy powered rod it’s super balanced and has a great taper.

With the sale I saw you can get within $25 of that price range.

If you keep your eyes open you might even be able to get one within your budget. I was able to score a brand new Perfect Pitch for $195 shipped a couple weeks ago. I haven’t used it yet so I can’t comment on it. It may not get used til the spring

I'll go on the low end and suggest the lews tp1 speed stick 7'3 heavy. I use it to throw 3/8 thru 3/4 ounce jigs. Both casting and pitching these jigs to cover.

7'2 H Zodias at that price point.  If you wait for a sale, Kistler Heliums are pretty incredible.  I use a 7'6 H and 7'0 H for 3/4oz jigs.

Agree with RichF, Helium 3 when they’re on sale is a great rod and a good deal. I’ve just never used their H or 5 power. But have read they’re good for 1/2 oz jigs.

Lots of great rods. I like my St. Croixs. Mojo 7’1”mh gets my vote at the lower end of the price range and Avid is great too if you feel like spending more. I have plenty of both and they all fish similar to me. Honestly the 7’4”MH bass x looks intriguing, haven’t held one but I’m guessing it’s like a mag mh. That’s getting longer than I care for however.

The rod I suggested is labeled as a grass rod. And it does it well, but fishes heavier jigs well too

What jig trailer are ya throwing that weighs 3/8 of an ounce?

 

Add 3/8 to 3/4 your only at 1 1/8 oz, I highly doubt at rod rated for 1 ounce or 1.5 ounce would be over or under kill.

 

Just because ya over or under by 1/8 of an ounce doesn't mean your rod will quit functioning!

Yes, I think a 3/8 oz plastic is on the high side, but I did see posted somewhere the weight of a bunch of plastics.  Senkos are full of salt and I think most 5 inchers came in at 3/8.  But more likely I would be using a Structure Bug or Rage Craw that are probably closer to 1/4 oz. 

 

But your point is valid and a 3/4 oz jig with trailer should come out close to 1 oz overall.  And that’s why I posted this thread because I’m in that “Tweener” zone between a MH and a Heavy rod.  

 

Then there’s the variance between rod manufacturers, and how one company is more/less stiff or tippy than another.  So I’m all ears when it comes to what people are using.  We are “ice up” here in the North in the next week or so... after that I probably have to wait until May to try out a new rod and hope it’s the right one.

Unless you are use to casting 1/2-3/4 oz jigs using heavy rated stiff rods ( I am) the 1/4-1 oz, MH rods may be a better choice for you.

Megabass rods do not have factory warranty sold by US distributors, you must go direct to Japan, makes it difficult to replace rods. Good rods but ST Croix or Dobyns are equal with excellent customer service.

I’m sorry but your information on the Megabass warranty is incorrect. All Megabass rods distributed by Megabass USA in the US and sold by authorized retailers carry a full warranty with Megabass USA. That includes the entire line of Orochi XX rods, as well as the Levante series, and 2017 USDM Destroyer series.
