Braid to leader with jigs?

Hi, is it better to use straight braid or braid to a leader with jigs? Thanks!

Yes...and no.

 

I do not.  But I don't have Zebra Muscles; few toothy fish...and I'm not concerned about line-shy fish.  I do use leaders for all other braid use.

I pretty much always run 40 lb braid to a 20lb fluoro leader for jigs. The abrasion resistance factor alone makes it worth it to me. I hooked a 4lber earlier this year that was on the other side of a rock. I landed it but my entire leader was trashed and shredded from the tug of war we had with the line grinding over the rock. Straight braid that fight would have lasted a second at most.

I've been using 40lb braid and a 17lb flouro leader for jigs for the last couple seaons, and I've been happy.

 

I sometimes throw straight braid when I break off and I'm too lazy to tie a new leader on, I've had success, but in clear water I'm still more confident in the flouro leader. I'm sure it's all mental though and I'd be fine with straight braid too..

Agree with the above....personally I use 30 to 40 lb power pro (yellow) with a silver thread leader in 14 to 20 depending on what I'm targeting.  Prefer 14 for deep football heads and 17/20 for pitching.

I don't use leaders and tie direct to the main line, usually mono/coploy, rarely braid.

Really depends on the water clarity that you are fishing. I use straight Sufix 832 30lb and 40lb braid because the waters I fish are pretty stained, murky/dingy waters. I'm not worried about the bass seeing my line. The clearer the water the more you may want or need to use a leader.

One can use a black sharpie to mottle the last couple feet of braid to make it look more natural, less obtrusive.  I use leaders with braid for confidence that I have the least visible terminal rig and to not lose braid when retying many times.

I normally use 40lb braid to 17lb fluoro, but with lighter jigs 30lb braid to 14lb fluoro. It's all about confidence - I just assume if it's straight braid they're going to see it.

I threw 50# Seaguar Flippin' braid with a 17# invisx leader for a while.   Connected the lines with a uni to uni.  Broke off a few times before I figured out how to tie it right.  When I'd get hung the leader knot never broke.

 

Currently trying out straight 20# fluoro.

thing. Braid-to-leader can be used for a lot of different

reasons.

I do the same as MckD unless it's a football jig that I'm dragging along. More often than not, I'll switch to straight fluoro for that even though I really dislike the stuff.

This says it all. I fish all rocky lakes and you wouldn't throw straight braid for more than 1 fish up here.

50lb Seaguar Flippin’ braid and a 12 or 15 lb Yo-zuri Hybrid leader tied with an FG knot.  Switched to FG after too many knot failures with Morified Albright.

Pitching into grass or weeds = straight braid .

Everything else = braid + leader.

I never use a leader with braid on a baitcaster. I also rarely fish jigs on braid though. I much prefer straight copolymer for jigs.

If you use a flouro leader, make sure its heavy enough. Since a leader is short, you can snap it on a hard hookset

Straight braid - flipping/pitching/roll casting into heavy grass. It cuts through vegetation and the visibility of green braid seems to get lost some in the weeds.

 

Braid to InvisX or Sniper - drop shot, finesse presentations, clear water.

 

Braid to Yozuri Hybrid - fishing rocks, trees, docks, and all things snaggy and abrasive

I am a die hard braid to leader guy, it's used on every set up I own, and for just about everything I throw. I rarely use straight braid anymore (except frogging). For jigs, I like to throw them on MH or H powered rods. The H powered rods are usually equipped this way: 50lb braid with a 15, 17, or 20 lb leader. The MH powered rods are set up like this: 30lb braid with a 12, 15, or 17 lb leader. Leader size/length it determined by cover, depth, water clarity, and some times type of jig I am throwing.

Always use a leader. 30lb Power Pro to 12 or 15lb Red Label tied with an FG knot.

Sensitivity is fantastic. I have zero issues with the FG going into the casting reel too.

Braid with a leader isn't the answer to catching jig bass, it's a crutch that can break in 2 places.

I use 30# braid to 15# maxima UG leader on MH casting. 

50# braid to 20# maxima UG leader for heavy casting.
