hair jigs!

just recently got into hair jigs! fished a new pond saturday and crushed the bass, new pond in 35 degree weather sunny windy  post cold front, didnt have high hopes, but crushed the fish on hair jigs.  saturday was my first time fishing hair jigs

now i need some good companies to buy hair jigs! also any tips for them would be great!

They are extremely easy to make, punisher jigs is the best brand around here. I used to tie duck feather and buck tail jigs without even using a vice

i should deff tie them! but i suck at it! practice makes perfect tho

If you are on Facebook check out SS Custom Jigs.  Dude has made a bunch of Hair jigs for me in the colors I wanted.  Very well made and inexpensive.  He's branched into Spinner baits and other stuff, too.  I'll be getting some soon.

There is a lot more skill required to tie good hair jigs then wrapping string around hair on a jig collar.

Like any good jig it starts with premium hook and jig head design that can be effectively fished without snagging. Colors are important regionally and the type of bass being targeted.

I fish hair jigs year around for giant bass and know a few things about them.

1. The hair should flare and breath as it moves through the water column, this gives it life.

2. Multiple colors combined gives the jig contrast same as any other jig skirt.

3. Use a trailer with your hair jigs when targeting LMB.

Punisher hair jigs should work for you.

so are you using like a football jig head, arky style the jig heads you normally see when using rubber skirt jigs, or the ones with round heads, minnow heads?

None of the above. I designed make my own jig head decades ago. The Punisher design head with weedgards looks as good as you will find in an off the shelf hair jig; modified stand up head with Gamakatsu hook and multiple colors to choose from.

Tom, what trailers do you recommend targeting LMB when you’re fishing hair jigs imitating Threadfin Shad?

I use a 3" X 3/4" wide split tail white pork rind nose hooked or GYCB #239 or 306 Shad single tail 3" or 4" grub threaded on. I don't see a green/chartreuse/ white hair jig offered by Punisher jigs, you may need to call them for custom colors.

If you looking for name brand company jigs, check out the VMC Dominator Marabou jig and the Outkast Tackle Feider Fly Marabou jigs. Both are quality hair jigs and are readily available from places like TW.

I used to fish the eagle claw Bucktails jigs, and when they were discounti ued for a bit before being made by wright&McGill again.  Now that they're discontinued, the only way to buy an 1/8 ounce Bucktails jigs with a small profile is custom, which I have yet to spring for, but I've heard good things about Andy's custom bass jigs from hair jig fanatic team9nine.  I've just been using punisher's float and fly craft hair jigs to get by since my bucktails ran out.

The punisher Camo or P&J in 3/8 oz should both work at Canyon lake. You want to use a smaller craw in the 2 1/2" size one of the skirt colors.

Marabou are feathers! If you are talking about jigs 1/64 to 1/32 oz then craft hair, marabou and other fly tieing materials work good. Hair bass jigs in 1/8-1/2 oz, deer bucktail, rabbit, bear, dog, monkey etc in 1/8 to 1/2 oz are a different category of jigs.

EG, 1/16-1/8 oz Spro Phat Fly is synthetic hair designed for float n Fly presentations and Spro Hair jig a heavy 1/2-1 oz ledge jigs are uniquely different.

 I can't remember what the white part is, craft hair or bucktail. Looking at that picture, I typically like to use the ends (tips) of the natural hair but I'm guessing that is craft hair where I cut it with scissors. The gray part is something called streamer fur from Bass Pro shops

Punisher and Gapens craw jig are my main go to.Both great for river Smallmouth.I use the craw jig all year,a real sleeper.
