I have a Shimano Sustain 3000FE with the flat handle covered with rubber.  The rubber is starting to wear/peel and is getting annoying.  I can order a new one from Shimano for about $20 pus shipping.  But I'm not really fond of the handle to begin with.  Anyone got any suggestions for replacement knobs besides stock?  Aftermarket or from another Shimano product are worth looking at.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have put the Septon PG II knobs that have come on many Shimano bc reels on my Shimano spinning reels. They’re only a few bucks a piece and very comfortable. But you have to order the correct ones for your handle orientation bc they’re contoured for right or left hand grip specific.

Don't forget to get a knob seal cap also.  Shimano only sells black plastic ones BNT 4150.  Silver or chrome would look real good but you need to go somewhere like Tackle Trap for that.  Also, your part # for the septon knob is BNT 4240 assuming you're left handed when spinning.  Right is BNT 4220. I've done this with my Stradics and can't imagine anything better.

Tackle Trap also carries the knobs. You have to buy the pair. (Just get another reel.  LOL)

Awesome!  Just the info I was looking for!  And since I also have a Stradic 3000FI, I can take care of both with one order!

Thanks!

Do your self another favor and order some of the Hedgehog handle knob bearings and add two bearings under each of those knobs if they only have one or none right now.

Are you sure the handle shaft length is the same? Stradic 3000 Fi is a type B handle but Sustain FE 2500 is a type A handle length but with a 5mm shaft diameter. Might want to take the knob out and see if they are the same length.

They are on order now, so I'm gonna wait and find out.  My Sustain is a 3000FE, and has the same handle as the Stradic 3000FI.

I think the bearings are a great idea, I just need to research which ones I need for these knobs.  The schematic for the 3000FE handle looks like it takes two different sizes, but I'm not putting that knob back on.

Looks like the handle length on both reels are the longer type B handle. I don't think the knob from the baitcaster is going to fit. They are typically shorter type A handle.

I’m pretty the knob shafts are the same on all the Shimano bc and spinning handles regardless of knob style. I’ve interchanged knobs on Stradic FJs as well as on Stradic CI4+ reels and Scorpion 1001XT, Chronarch CI4+, Chronarch MGL, 13 Mets, from Curado I’s. The different knob types just have different depth recesses for the screws and different knob caps.

Alsi the handle knob bearings should all be the same size for all the handles and knobs. But sometimes when swapping a bearing in for a plastic collar you need a small metal shim for the snuggest fit. You can order them from Shimanos parts website.

Starting at about 2009-2010 all of the shimano 4000 and under comes standard with type A so it's interchangeable with the baitcasters. 2002-2007 was when it was a big headache to categorize the shimano spinner. 1000-2500 is type A while the 3000-4000 is the longer type B. But the type A of the older reel has 5 mm shaft, just like the Type B. Now it's all standardized. Type A is 4 mm shaft with 4x7x2.5 bearing while type B has a 5mm shaft but requires two different bearing size because of the step down to 4mm at the end of the shaft.

Believe it or not, for the 2007 Stella FD 3000-4000, the USA version use a type B handle while the JDM use a type A handle. Had to order the second half of the handle from plat.co.jp to replace 3 USA Stella FD knob because the owner got tired of replacing the melted septon grip on them. The JDM rubber grip never melts and replacing the second half of the handle means that it can now accept the Stella FE and Fi knob as well as smaller aftermarket round knob.

It's only a matter of time before you can't find part for the older Shimano so the $30 handle shaft swap per reel ensure future knob compatibility for a long long time.

Unfortunately for the type B handle, the smallest aftermarket knob is 34mm in diameter.

The smaller 30 mm for the type A is ideal if you like smaller knob. Resized_Screenshot_20171112-181235.thumb.jpeg.0f88cbe23f3f8cde2eab711439627756.jpeg

OK, so the knobs came in.  They are the right length.  But when I tried to put them on, there is obviously a spacer or bearing or something I am missing.  The knob will slide about 1/2 inch along the length of the handle shaft.  Does anyone know what spacer I might need, or do I just buy a couple extra bearings?

Thanks,

Pictures will help. The Type B handle which is on your reel is 35 mm and the Type A is about 28 mm. I would imagine three bearings 5x7.2.5 mm. The handle on the Stradic Fi above will also slide without those bearings.
