Excalibur Spittin’ Image

Went fishing today, in spite of the crazy temperature drop and 20mph winds, and didn’t do too bad. Highlight of the day was the lure (looks brand new) that I was able to snag out of a tree along the bank. I did a quick Google search on it, but all the results I get seem a little odd. So, it’s marked as a saltwater Excalibur Spittin’ Image, but everything on Google says those are made by Heddon. Anyone have any information on these lures? Like what type of bait it is, how to fish it, price, etc. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Unfortunately you're out of luck here.  The Xcalibur brand is no longer around - it was the old rotating trebles (Xcalibur) that came equipped on many of the now Pradco baits.  The Pop-R, Spit'n Image, Poppin Image and the very popular (and hard to find) Xcalibur One Knocker lipless crankbait to name a few.  

 

Heddon was/is the company that made them.  I don't own any of the new versions, though I do have a few of the 'Xcalibur versions' (equipped with those hooks which at the time were revolutionary).  I believe I bought them in the early 90's - give or take.  They're a cool bait, few different sizes back then, walk very well and get bit.  Bill Dance had his name on the models I own.  I still keep them in my box and use them occasionally.  

 

if you're looking to buy that specific version, ebay is the place to look.

Thanks! Not looking to buy any more. Just wanted to know how to fish it and what type of lure it was. Now that I know it’s the same as the Heddon Spittin’ Image, I can just use that as a reference. 

 

Would it be safe to assume that it’s an older lure, in spite of the fact that it’s in mint condition, since it says Excalibur instead of Heddon?

I think Xcalibur "disappeared" in 2015.

Xcalibur has only been gone for 2 years. It may not be an old lure just made by a brand that no longer exsists. My favorite Squarebill, Lipless and Jerkbait were made by xcalibur (XR50, One knocker, EEratic Shad). I believe the Heddon is the exact same with a different brand and packaging just like the Booyah One Knocker is the same.

 

 

 

Edit: The bait you possess is "Excalibur" not "Xcalibur". Those are two different companies. The brand you have is a knock-off of Heddon products. They were normally sold at chain store or "discount" stores. Just use what you know about to Heddon baits and you'll have success with your bait.

A knockoff? Awesome. Thought it looked way too new to be from a company that went under that long ago. Oh well, I’ll toss some new hooks on it and not worry about losing it.

The spittin image is a really good top water bait. I have some of them along with the bill dance swimmin image.

I think that’s the poppin’ image you’re thinking of. This one has a rounded nose, no cup to it.

@BrackishBassin The spittin' image is a topwater bait that works kind of like a zara spook in that it does a "walk the dog" type retrieve. The lure will move side to side in the water with its nose up. You retrieve it by putting your rod tip close to the water and jerking it downward. If you want to see a great video of how its retrieved try how to fish the zara spook video on BR's youtube channel (good job on the video Glenn). The retrieve is the same.

Thanks! I’m familiar with how to work a Spook. Use them quite a bit in saltwater.

There is a small cup on the nose of the bait that generates the spitting action of the bait as it walks, hence the name.

Doesn't appear to be any cup on the nose of the bait I found. Is it possible you're thinking of something else?

I also found onr but mine was trashed. I repainted it (hobby only) and it's a great walking bait.

I have one in my top water box that I dont use . IT  may have been used it once or twice .
