heysarge Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 I went fishing with my wife in the pond behind the house today. Half of the bass we caught (LOL she caught) had an indent above and between their eyes (Forehead). The fish were small and kinda skinny. BACKGROUND: I am not a good fisherman. I can catch some bass but I suck. I do not know the seasonal cycle of bass so I am kinda out of my league on what Fall bass are supposed to look like. Earlier this year we had an alge kill and the pond is still pretty clear. The county extension folks said pray the food chain didn't get schwacked. The water temp is mid 50's...cold. So should I be concerned? And why do my fish have dents in their foreheads? Any help would be appreciated. Cheers! Quote

NorthwestBasser Posted November 10, 2017 Posted November 10, 2017 Haven't been on the forum in a while, but this was discussed a while back. Someone here contacted a biologist, and between him and others here it was determined the indent is an anatomical condition that occurs when the fish opens it's mouth. It's not visible when the jaw is shut. It's perfectly normal and just a function of the mouth opening and closing. 3 Quote

RHuff Posted November 12, 2017 Posted November 12, 2017 I’ve noticed this too here in WV. Some bass will have a dent and some not so much. Most are about the size of a thumb print. I’ve always just chalked it up as just a unique quality of a bass and never really thought much about it.. Quote
