With American Legacy Fishing offering 25% off G. Loomis rods the wife has given her blessing on getting one.  The nicest (most expensive) rods I own are Dobyn's Champion Extreme.  The extremes are really nice but from what I read they are not in the same class as the NRX.

I'm looking for some advice on which rod to choose.  The one that caught my eye is the NRX 895c JWR.  It has a 1/4 oz - 1 oz rating so it seems like it would be the most versatile.  My concern is that it's rated xtra Heavy.  I'm not familiar with the G. Loomis tapers at all.

The rod will primarily be used for 3/8oz jigs with trailer and light (1/4oz and under) TX rigs.

Any opinions and advice would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I would call American Legacy and talk to Brian or Adam and tell them what your wanting the rod to do..

If it were me, it would be either the 873crr or 894.

I would say get the 893 or 873crr depending on cover. The 895 is a beast of a rod and far too powerful for those weights. The 894 really shines with 1/2oz plus. My first choice would definitely be the 893. It's arguably the most sensitive rod in the nrx series (852 may give it a run).

893 for upto 3/8 oz jigs in light/ moderate cover. I probably prefer slightly less powerful rods than most folks though. The 873CRR is ~1/2 power heavier.

i would go with the 894 it should excel in the 3/8oz -1/2oz range which really you will be throwing most of the time with jigs

P.S. Another site seems to be running a 30% off sale on all Loomises.

care to elaborate?

853, 893, or if you need a bit more muscle the 873. The 894 is overkill and the 895 is not even a rod I would consider ever for that matter.

The newly designed GLX is a very nice rod too. I have a GLX 892s and a NRX872s. I wouldn't say the NRX is $100 better.

I feel like if I get the GLX I'll wish I had gotten the NRX.

from what ive read, the 895 would be way too heavy to be versatile.

I dont think its gets more sensitive than the NRX line. a problem with the heavier powered ones are that they are not well balanced. The 843 is OK and the 873 (sits between 893 and 894 in power) starts to suck.

I find the reel seats to be uncomfortable on the NRXs- but that may not be the case for you. I'd handle one (with reel) if you can. The reel seat and balance made me trade my 873c for a MB FMJ and i am glad i did. I still have the 842c and 843c and I like them with smaller reels...

I'd look into the 893c. Very well liked rod. I hear the balance is OK. Many say its perfect for 3/8oz jigs and some say its just a bit underpowered for those.

I can vouch for the 852s. My favorite spinning rod. I hear the 872s is great too but i wouldnt use either for 3/8oz jigs.

Better be ready to spend a lot more money because you will probably be wishing you had more than one NRX.

Since its a sale the price difference shouldn't be as much. Go for it if you can afford to.

IMO anything 3 power is the most all around power in the G-loomis NRX.

My favorite is a 852 but the 843 does everything well.

From everything I'm reading and from you guys a lot of people feel like the difference in NRX and GLX is not worth the extra money.  I'm leaning towards a GLX.

If you're looking for a specific jig rod (3/8th w trailer) then it could be worth it to get the NRX since that is one rod (jigs) that should be the best you can afford. I fish GLX and Champ Extremes and feel the GLX is a lighter, more sensitive rod - as it should, being $100 more expensive (retail) than the DX. That said, I have no problems fishing jigs with the Extremes and don't feel I miss any bites because of it. In the end, only you know your budget and whether it is worth the extra money to get the NRX.

Right now my jig rod is the Champion XP 744 (jig rod special).  Essentially I'm looking for something that is lighter and more sensitive.  I have an Extreme 744 for heavier TX rigs.

Are the powers similar between the two brands?  I'm in between the 853/854 893/894 in either NRX or GLX.

I talked with Brian.  Thank you for the recommendation.  He was very helpful.

I want thank everyone for their input.  I decided to go with the NRX 854.

I received the NRX last night.  All I can say is WOW.  It is so light.   I've paired with a Shimano Aldebaran and it balances out very well.

I can't wait to fish it but the initial impression is amazing.  I'm already wanting to get another!

I probably won't get to fish it until the middle of next week.
