Mr.Gump Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I hate my seat...It's garbage..It's a sit in kayak and after an hour or 2....My back and butt start hurting.... My question is, is there a way to make it more comfortable or do you know of a good replacement seat for a sit in? Thanks. 1 Quote
PECo Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 The first thing I would try is more padding on the bottom of the seat. A cheap solution is to use a foam gardener’s knee pad. Ocean State Job Lot sells them for less than $2.00. A more expensive option is a gel seat pad. I use one from Purple: https://onpurple.com/seatcushions/buy?type=Everywhere it works for me. 2 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted November 8, 2017 Super User Posted November 8, 2017 Agree with @PECo, try a seat cushion of sorts first. You should post of picture of your setup as there may be someone here who has done modifications on the same yak, or similar one... Otherwise, Googling DIY kayak seat mods for (your kayak) is a great source. Hit the Images link and have a gander at the mods (assuming there are for yours). Quote

I have a sit in kayak with an ergo-design seat. It's fine for me now but it wasn't at first. I realized it was my PFD causing the issues and not the seat. The PFD was the full upper body design and it forced me to sit a bit to far forward which caused pain after awhile. Once I switched to a self-inflating kind with an open back I was able to sit in the seat like it was intended. I can Kayak all day with no discomfort now. Quote
OperationEagle Posted November 8, 2017 Posted November 8, 2017 I had a Jackson Cuda 12. I really liked their stadium seat design but still got some serious pain on my bottom and lower back. Mainly because of sitting in one position for 6-7 hours at a time. I spoke with an orthopedic doc about this and he mentioned that they are seeing a higher occurrence of this connected with increased kayak/small watercraft popularity. This was my main impetus for moving to the full bass boat as (coupled with lifting and moving the kayak) I couldn't tolerate it any longer. I do miss it. Just wish there was a way to mitigate this issue altogether. Hope you are able to find a solution that works for you. 1 Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted November 9, 2017 Super User Posted November 9, 2017 Something like this: https://www.austinkayak.com/products/1241/Hobie-Mirage-Inflatable-Seat-Pad-i-Comfort.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Shopping:%20ACK%20PLA&adpos=1o5&scid=scplp1241_2665_1&sc_intid=1241_2665_1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA84rQBRDCARIsAPO8RFxTQuh3jk2FulynD_-UT6c30K25Y1isIahGXo8KsP1kfEFSYpXqUnQaAq1jEALw_wcB That’s about as much help as I can offer. Both my kayaks are SOTs and have awesome seats. Best of luck. Quote

Onvacation Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 When I'm going to be out for the full day, I put a Bass Pro flotation cushion on my seat. It's cushy and it's a safety device. 2 Quote

Based on that, I'd look for a lower profile cushion of some sort, either like the one first mentioned, a gel-based one, or go to a kayak shop and see if you can get a sheet of closed-cell foam (relatively cheap) and make your own... 1 Quote
Turtle135 Posted November 9, 2017 Posted November 9, 2017 I had a sit inside kayak back in the 1990's. The seat comfort problem I experienced was not lack of padding on the bottom of the seat but the fact that the "seat back" was so low. They keep the seat backs low on a sit inside kayak so that you can still install a kayak skirt (aka: spray skirt, cockpit cover). What gave me relief was dropping a portable stadium style seat right on top of the existing seat which gave my lower back the support it needed. 1 Quote
