The Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, Virginia ponds are now off limits to all but club members.

The ponds were stocked with trout and to fish them you need a club pass.

Club passes will be given to club members, only.

Bummer.

Didn't know you could even fish there.

Do you fish Swan or Shields lake in Bryd Park at all?  Last Friday they stocked Shields Lake with trout. Today I fished Swan lake for 90 minutes and scored a big "0"!.  I just started fishing these and haven't figured the LM out yet. Caught couple recently in Swan but very difficult.

68, hate to tell you this but Swan and Shields lakes are terrible. Very few fish.

The city holds it free fishing day the first weekend in June at Shields and the kids may nail a bream or ring perch.  But no bass or trout.

Then the city, in its infantine wisdom, stocks Shields with trout the weekend after the free fishing event. Go figure.

You can continue to give it a shot but I don't think you will score any bass. If you do, please let me know.

Wow, great to know, I have been there 4 times for total of 7.75 hours in last 2 weeks. In Shields lake I had a fish short strike lure as I was almost pulling it out if water but otherwise nothing. I've thrown everything at these ponds.

In Swan lake I caught two, one on spinner with paddletail trailer and the other on Big EZ swim bait, both were small, about 1.5lbs. Both were caught in area between shore and that little island in lake.

I've really been frustrated so thanks. Do you know a good public pond or lake in downtown I can hit that might be better?

68, sorry to say that I don't know of any ponds between the Marymount park and downtown.

However, please get a copy of the 2017 Freshwater Fishing in Virginia booklet and note the places north and south of the Historic James River where you can fish. You should find a copy at Green Top, Bass Pro Shop, Dick's or your favorite tackle shop.

Some guys will walk down to the river by the Nickel Bridge and fish the Historic James River. Wdycrankbait is one of these guys and I will ask him to give you the details. Be sure to ask him about snakes even though the Richmond cold weather probably has put them into hibernation.

Now, here's Woody!!!!

Hey 68,

Sam just called me and while I have not read all of this thread yet.  I know there are some fish in there!

Give me a minute to look at the maps and I'll share what I know.

Also, what part of Chesterfield are you in 68?

Okie dokie,

First,  there are bass in Swan Lake.  About mid-September I went out there with my wife for a break and ended up talking for a local angler there.  How showed me numerous pictures of 5's, 6's, and even an 8 coming out of there.  (The background of his pictures matched so, I know he was telling the truth.)  About 5 minutes of talking he walked off he went back to fishing.  Then, he called me over to show me a 4 cruising the shallows.  I think he said he did a lot of damage on spinnerbaits and senkos (he had a red & black one tied on) there.

But, the lake is in the city, it has some trash in it, and most people go there to exercise, picnic, feed all the thousands of Canadian geese, i.e. no pressure.

Personally, I would use a chatterbait in a nature color.  Skip Fountain & Shields lakes, nothing but wasted time is in there.

Shoot me a PM if you want to meet up, maybe we could drag Sam out as well.

Wdy, good to know someone's having success. I'll PM you to see about maybe hooking up and be great if Sam was up to it.

I am on southside by Woodlake, I kayak Swift Creek Res, due to family needs don't really venture too far from area.

Sounds like a plan.

You're a hop, skip, and jump from me. I'm down by Chesterfield County airport.

This is true!!!! There are all giants in Swan and Fountain..everything 3 lbs and over. Trick is getting them to bite. Personally have caught 4.5 and 5 pounders out of Fountain and 3 lb bass and 7.5 lb Bowfin out Shields. Buddy snagged a 7 pounder out of Swan with Jackyll Swimbait.

Yes, but we don't ever say anything about the park's lakes as the populace will catch and eat the beauties.

Fish early in the AM and leave before the crowds show up around 10.
