Hi guys. Been quite a while since I've posted or even been on. I have had an interesting summer. Been teaching my brother in law bass fishing. Had no idea what I was getting myself into. First, we're both retirees. He, in his late sixties and me, well, let's just say well past that. First day he shows up with 2 Zebco 202's and spaghetti rods. I expected that so I had 2 baitcasters ready for him. Surprisingly he mastered the anti backlash thing fairly quickly . Keeping the lure in the water, that's another story . Half the crankbaits and spinnerbaits that I gave him wound up unreachable in the trees. By the end of October the trees are already decorated for Christmas . He managed to fall out of the boat once , with cell phone in his pocket. Fortunately that was in August, so no danger of freezing. Also close enough to shore that he was able to stand up and climb back into the boat. I threatened once to beach the boat and run up to the nearest Wal-Mart and get him a coloring book and a box of crayons.  Seriously all in all we had a lot of fun. Looking forward to next year, I think....?

Good to hear from you!  I was just looking around for you a couple weeks ago. Checked last visit/post date etc just to make sure you're still coming around.  Love the coloring book comment!

Good to see you Hootie! I have fallen out of a boat more than once and decorated more than a few trees so I can't hold it against him. I would question why you're giving him your tackle to throw in trees, but I've done that too... welcome back!

Good story....I had a new electric put on the bow of mine this year and threatened my partner I was going to throw him out of the boat.....well....it happened the first trip.  we were fishing docks and he took a step forward to cast at the same time I was going the other way kind of quickly....he just kept walking...I DID NOT LAUGH....at least not until I knew he was safe and back in boat.  Gosh it was funny.  Was a warm day too so that was good.

One of the members I respect most here.  Nice to see you posting!

And by the way, in Brazil when ever we'd get hung up in a tree our guide would say, "Hey!  No monkey fish today!"

Thank you for the kind words Redlinerobert. I must have asked him a dozen times if he was bass fishing or fishing for squirrels. A tree pounder.

Wonderful you are back with us and on the water.

Yes, teaching someone how to bass fish is very nerve racking. You have to have the patience of an angel.

Since you brought up teaching someone about bass fishing, maybe the guys can start another thread asking for stories regarding instructing someone how to bass fish or giving them some secrets.

For example, went to my favorite barber, Roger, for my haircut and we talked about fishing. He usually fishes for saltwater fish off the beach and then Sac-a-Lait and bream from his aluminum boat in the upper Historic James River.

He was telling me that his son casts a baitcaster so easily and he is having a difficult time learning how to use one. So after my haircut I went to my car and retrieved my baitcasting rig and went back into the shop and showed him, and two other guys waiting for haircuts, how to "balance the rod, reel, line test and bait weight" to avoid backlashes.

None of these three guys who fish realized that there were parameters stamped on rods. And they had no idea of how to "balance" the rig to avoid backlashes.

I am sure they will hit the water ASAP and give it a try.

Your story?????
