I'm looking to get a Dobyns jig rod for throwing 1/2 jigs on the reservoirs in Maryland. Most of my time will be fishing grasslines, lay downs, occasional rocks and open water down to 40'. I'm  leaning towards the DC 744C but would like other opinions.

Thanks,

Billy

Dobyns Champion DC734C or Champion extreme DX744C, the difference is about $100.

Which rod are you considering?

Dobyns Extreme 745 HP and don't look back.

That's my first choice. I have a warranty replacement for an Extreme but they are out of the DX 745 and won't have them until January.  They are revamping the line.

I would wait for what you want, DX745C.

He's asking about the champion 744.

OP, the end of the month is the Black Friday sales at TW. Get a DX745 HP for 20% off and skip the champion 744c.

That's not an option right now. I just forked out a Disney World trip for the family and with Christmas around the corner, I'm broke.

Well....assuming you aren't getting a club discount, the champ 744 is 259.99. In 21 days the DX745HP will be 289.99...Personally, I'd wait and spend the extra 30$. The DX HP's are awesome. The new champs are nicer than the previous version but still not worth the 259 price tag if you're wanting it for sensitivity.

Call Gary and explain your situation, he could loan you a rod until Jan.

I'm getting a replacement for the DX 703SF that snapped on me for the 2nd time. I was offered a Serria and a Champion because they are out of a lot of the DX models. The DX 745 is a killer rod!

DX784c Mike Long Jig rod is a really awesome deep water football jig rod.  That's what i would choose of the ones listed. DX795 is an amazing heavy duty rod.

I'm fishing grasslines, light laydowns, brush piles that the sneaky tournament guys drop in the winter, rocks, ledges and open water. I throw up to 1/2oz pitching and football jigs. Do you think this should work? I like the fact that I could also use it for a C-rig and chatterbaits.

Thanks,

Yes , it will work fine. You aren't fishing anything heavy. The rod will excel at fishing rock piles and off shore brush piles in mid/deep water. Light laydowns and grass lines will be fine as well.

The 744 Champion is a great jig Rod. Of course you lose a bit of the sensitivity by not going the Extreme route, however it isn’t PLENTY sensitive IMO for tossing 3/8-3/4oz Jigs. Dragging them, pitching them, etc.

the only downside to that rod is it is a JIG rod specifically. Carolina rig works well too. The 734C is a better utility rod that can throw spooks, buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, and more.

If Jigs are your main or only use, the 744 will be great!

Wagster,

Stop by the house and I'll loan you an Extreme 784, 745, 743 or the Champion 744.  Wait until January and get the new 745HP. It'll be well worth the wait.;)

Doug,

Wow what a generous offer. I'm going to pick up a DX 784 and grab a DX 745 in January.  I just sold some things to free up some money.

Thanks,

Billy
