Hey everyone, I was recently fishing for some rainbow trout in a lake, and I had a few trout follow my lure for a little bit, then swims away. These trout were good size too. 3-6lbs. Is there any lures you recommend or any techniques that can help me out?

they stock one of the local lakes here with trout every spring.

I don't try to fish for them, but catch a ton of them when the water is cold using a ned rig for bass.

Sometimes you can tip a spoon or spinner with a tiny piece of live or scented bait

This is where I was headed, if they are stockies.  The dough even works on wild fish as well.  You can use a float rig, if there's current or a slip shot rig if it's still water.  The dough kind of floats.  Use just enough to cover the hook.  I use little Raven hooks, #10 or 12.  These have worked on steelhead over 15 lbs.

Avoid a steady retrieval throughout the entire cast. Incorporate variety to pick up on the pattern for that particular mode. Close the sale! Mix it up by experimenting with these two scenarios:

Kastmaster spoons with a steady to stop and go retrieval draw them in then kill it right when they are getting close to let it flutter down. They will let you know within a couple of chasers if this is the ticket

other scenario- start with your retrieval (whatever was working for you originally to initiate the Chase) then burn or speed up your lures with rapid fire  twitches of your rod tip to simulate prey knowing it’s being agggeesively pursued. Think of a gazelle being chased by a cheetah (run for your life with misdirected dodges when something is on its arse)

when streamer fishing wih with a fly fishing guide, he would YELL at me to never stop stripping my line and twitching my rod tip when a Brownie would pursue the fly. The moment I did that, the fish would turn away 180

One last tip. Strongly recommend using #4 fluoro

I just bought some powerbait and set up a rod for it. How are you guys fishing it? Just casting it and put it in a holder for a bite? or do you so a slow retrieve? I'm used to bass fishing or fly fishing so the sit and wait kind of tortures me. However, I did see some people catch a ton of trout with powerbait while I struggled with a fly.

Leader and weight depend on the conditions but the stocked fish I catch in the ponds or "lakes" around here I use 1/4 ounce slip weight or lighter, leader depends on the condition, again,  and size 14 treble hook with power bait doe.

You can do a bobber rig, or do a mini catfish rig.  Basically, it's a light Carolina rig, without the beads.

Last week I caught 38 rainbow trout( including a beautiful palomino trout) and my better half caught 4 for a total of 42 rainbow trout in less than 6 hours of fishing in a pressured body of water where they stock trout every Fall and Spring. This was in a northern state and it was my first time in my life that I have fished for trout. It was a lot of fun and I will consider making another trip up north for these fish. I used 6 pound test line and found that small inline spinners to be a very productive lure for trout.

Whats the state creel limit? 50 per person?

I released all the trout, did have some salty looks from other fishermen that wanted to keep my trout but I rather release the trout so someone else can have fun catching them. Could of easily caught +50 rainbow trout if I wanted to, but I was also fishing for smallmouth bass and was able to catch a few.

When they're following but not eating, I use a Turner Jones micro jig under a small bobber. Cast it out where you've been seeing them and just let the waves incorporate the action. Be ready though, they'll shoot that bobber under fast and let go even faster. 4lb test is key to allow the jig to move naturally.

When I used to fish Lake Shasta I would use a small Rattle Spot from Cotton Cordell in the 1/8 size.  Oh my gosh it was deadly on everything in that lake.  Light line...long casts and violent bites.

Where I fish, it's a limit of one, and if you keep one, you're done fishing.  That one fish has to be OVER 21" as well.

I was kidding about the 50 creel limit. Haha. I have never seen states allow you to keep more than 6. It's 4 for me and 6 if I go in certain areas. I just moved to Richmond, VA and so far I'm irritated by the weak trout scene.

Pistol Pete behind a clear float. The have a rubber band that twist on the line and you can fill with water to sink it some too. Also panther martins are killer, black body with yellow spots, and the yellow body with red spots always produced for me. Both gold and silver blades. Another option we used to do was corn on a hook, no weight or bobber, open bail and watch fow it to swim. Last option a small rapala countdown and fish a erratic retrieve. Good luck

Awesome! Thanks. I believe I have small water floats. I actually just picked up a 1/8 oz panther martin gold/black body yellow spots. However, I'm going to start off fly fishing, but will have the spinner set up close by. The problem is that VA just stocked nothing but dinks. They make you purchase an extra license for trout and stock goldfish. Pretty sure the Bass are crushing them as we speak. I should bust out a rainbow trout whopper plopper.

These are my backups if I don't have any of the micro jigs. They're great suspended under a bobber but I hate having to replace the plastic on them every couple of fish. Excellent fish catchers though and not just for trout.
