lilbuddy Posted October 29, 2017 Posted October 29, 2017 Hi All, A couple of months ago I purchased a used 2010 TR-18 pro w/ 150 optimax. I recently had to add some oil and it was recommended to me to use Pennzoil Premium Plus... I know another guy who had a mercury optimax but he had the pro xs.... anyway he uses Mercury DFI oil... is it worth it? It's a little more than twice as much. I noticed after I added the Pennzoil my next trip out I was getting some smoking out of the motor. Is that normal? I had the boat out a few times prior and I don't recall smoke coming off the motor...I will say the smoke was in the morning. I know thats common on some outboards. I just never recognized it coming out of mine. So 2 questions. 1. DFI oil worth it? If so, can I start to use it by just adding some now and eventually move over to just dfi. 2. Has anyone else had issues with the pennzoil premium plus causing your outboard to smoke? TIA Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted October 30, 2017 Posted October 30, 2017 I made the switch to Pennzoil a few months ago and no issues at all. Same smoke as with the Merc oil. Quote

Super User slonezp Posted October 30, 2017 Super User Posted October 30, 2017 The lubricating properties are compatible with the engine. The DFI oil has additives for carbon as well as other things that may foul the engine. So, the Penzoil will work but it may not be the best option Quote

I don't mind spending more money to prolong the life of my motor. Quote
