Hey everyone,

Noticed that Quantico Marine Base has about 10 different areas to fish on their base and don't have to be active/retired military to fish.  Civilians can just buy a temporary or season permit from the base and have access to all the different areas.  Just curious if anyone has gone there or goes there on a regular basis?  I feel like living around there, this is a great place to have multiple spots to hit in one day.  I read their largest (Lunga) is open 24 hours a day!

Lunga is closed indefinitely, unfortunately.  They closed it a few years ago to remove unexploded ordnance.  Funding for that project never materialized and there's none in sight.

You can get a permit at the Mx.  I've fished a little but, don't have a lot of insight for you.  You can put a kayak in on Chopawamsic Creek, and a yak or canoe on Breckenridge.  Not sure if you actually put a craft on any of the other waters.  I set out to find a couple other ponds one day, but got hopelessly lost.

I have a few friends that fish Smith fairly regularly, some good fish in there but tough!!

If you have a kayak Chopawamsic Creek is worth getting the permit. Good largemouth bass fishing and the dreaded Northern Snakeheads are present.

Yeah couple hours after I posted this I found the site on Quantico about Lunga being closed.  I've been looking at Smith, do you know can you drop in w/o going into Quantico?  This isn't an issue, I'm able to get on the base.  I do have a kayak and willing to go where I need but want to try and stay within Prince William/Stafford county, feel there's plenty of places to drop in.  Looking at Chopawamsic on google maps, is it pretty calm?  Went out to Leesylvania and went in and had a bit of a fight with getting towards Powells creek and then leaving and getting back to dock.  Maybe able to settle some of this with buying an anchor system but thats a whole different topic.
