I have a 1999 Merc 150 that had the powerhead rebuilt ($4500) over the winter. Put in the water last weekend to break it in (doubled the oil in gas since they removed the oil injector as part of the rebuild) and ran it for a couple of hours up to 3K rpm, everything went fine. Put it back in the water yesterday, slowly moved away from the ramp and out into the main lake and got it back up to 3K rpm. Boat went about a quarter mile, surged a couple of times (sort of like your lawn mower when its running out of gas), and then just died. Tried to restart, motor turned over fine, but not even a hint of firing. Thought my plugs might be fouled from the extra oil so I cleaned them but no luck. Motor seems to be getting plenty of gas.....anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong? :-/

I'm no mechanic......and it sounds to me like that's what you need.  I'd head back to the place where it was rebuilt.  You do have some type of warranty?

Warrenty probably won't cover that.  Warrenty is going to cover the long block, not the stuff bolted onto it so be ready to spend another few hundred.

You will need to determine if it's fuel or ignition.  Check the spark on several plugs wires and see it they are kicking a long blue spark.  There are a number of things it can be, but need to know how to trouble shoot it and have a DVA or peak voltmeter if it's ignition.

By the way, you did check and make sure you didn't accidently pull the kill cord.

I have no idea what might have gone wrong,

but I can tell you that it totally sucks.

Good luck with it.

First check gas pump that ball up and see if it fires.  Then pull your sparkers and check for spark make sure you ground to block.

Everything good there get your self to PEP Boys or some place and buy a $10 compresun tester.

The way it quit sounds like a ring. Yes they will do this without a sound. If theres a 10% difference in compressun you have problems.

my father in law had his power head rebuilt and his boat did something very similar. It was the fuel filter. It seems like it was getting gas when he checked, but would not run. The filter "leaked" fuel into the motor but would not allow enough for operation.

I've got a '99 Mercury 150 XR6, and I've removed the Oil injector from mine as well.  I will tell you, when I first got I a couple of months ago it took me a while to get used to starting it.  It floods super easily, and that is exactly what it would do... It would turn over fine, but not fire.  If that is the problem, with mine, I have to choke it for about 7 seconds to get that initial fire, then pump the gas until it finally cranks.  Hope that helps.

Check the fuel line, bulb, and hose fitting where it attaches to the engine.

Also, remove the engine cowl and pump the bulb and look closely at the fuel pump for any leaks.
