Can I get a SCV Blank in black or the natural grey color? I want to use a higher end blank but do not like gloss flip blue or whatever they are calling it.

Why would you not ask St. Croix?

You're not alone! Check out Rod Geeks, they have some very familiar sounding blanks in unpainted or painted.

The newest scv is dark forest green and I like it.  Sometimes I wish they were just black.  The previous gen avids were black before they went charcoal.

Nope.  Your options are Blue/green flip, forest green Pearl and Pearl White.  There is a guy on FB that will paint blanks and powder coat guides whatever color you want.

Rodgeeks does offer some good blanks, but none in the same class as a SCV.

I have a 3SMLXF Avid and am looking to upgrade since this feels too light? Figured I would go with a 4 or 5 CMLXF blank as a replacement. Don't they make the SCV in brown as well?

It has been 8+ years since the brown SCV.  You might have to go with a 4cmlxf as I don't think the 5 has both a C and S model in mlxf.

Which blank would you recommend since you do a lot of drop shotting.

Right now my main DS rod is 5s610mlxf-B, extended to 7'.  I have another one in the works, in the forest green, that I'm not going to extend.  The mlxf may not be for you if you feel the 3smlxf is too light.

Maybe step up to their shakeyhead model, the 5s610mxf?

Keep in mind that all rods that are colored are painted.  If you feel strongly enough about the finish and don't mind voiding the warranty, you can pretty easily remove the paint and have a natural graphite finish which can either be left that way or made glossy with lumiseal or similar product (NOT EPOXY!).

I have a brown SCV 7 foot med power, fast action and it is my favorite tube rod.  I just started using a Rodgeeks 4 series 7 foot med power fast action and it, in my opinion, compares favorably with the SCV.  It has a little more power, so not likely the right rod for drop shot.  My point is that the 4 level Rodgeeks products are pretty darned good.

Ask Thorne Bros. Don’t know if they’ll sell ya one but I think they get black SC-V’s from Croix.
