Back Cove Portland, Me

Anyone have any experience fishing back cove in portland? My sister and brother in law live there and i was thinking of taking the kayak out and see if i can't hook into anything. I have ZERO  ocean fishing experience.

I've heard of some stripers being caught in that area but I don't think they would be in there this time of year. I'd check with some tackle shops in that area. Not DSG or large box stores like that but look for the smaller, more personable, knowledgeable shops.

Thats basically what im reading. We would be better off finding a pond and target the green fish. I just got a couple new savage gear swimbaits that im can't wait to try out. Thanks for the advice

Absolutely! The fall bite in Maine can be very good!

yea stripers have gone south! you may get a holdover or 2 but its hit or miss! trout and bass are the way to go

Right now is one of the best times of the year to target big smallies.

Ive been crushing smallies the past month. Typically I'm fishing in 20-35 ft using a blade bait and an underspin. Ive also had some luck with a football jig and drop shot. Water temps are definitely cold. Sat i was fishing a pond with a surface temp of 38 degrees... The best day this past weekend 81 smallies with 6 of them over 4 lbs. Lunker was a tie, two fish weighed in at 4-13. All smallies.

I’ve been using blade baits and hair jigs the last few outings but wasn’t able to coax Plymouth Smallies to bite. Yellow, however, perch cooperated in a very short feeding window.

 

I’ve got tomorrow off and might give it another go.

My season is now over. However if I was to go out I would fish main lake points or humps with rock that have a steep drop from 15-35 ft using the above mentioned baits.

Thanks for more advice.  There's another pond in Plymouth that has a couple humps just like you mention.  I can't say for sure I'll get out while the water's still in a liquid state.
