Super User NHBull Posted October 20, 2017 Super User Posted October 20, 2017 Heck, I feel like a kid at Christmas putting the new rig together. I know one does not NEED the self deploy of the Ulterra, but given I plan on this being the last boat I buy, 500.00 over the period of years, doesn't seem that bad, but it does pay for some nice batteries, ect...... In your opinion, is this feature worth 500? Anyone with the terrova wish they went for the Ulterra? Thanks guys.... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 20, 2017 Super User Posted October 20, 2017 I would prefer the speed of a cable style steer. Since the Ulterra is a power assist, that would be my choice. I haven't tried one yet, but there's quite a few members here with it. They'll chime in soon! Quote
PAbasser927 Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I have the Terrova and I love it. But is easy to enjoy something you are used to, especially when you have no experience with something nicer. If I had gone with the Ulterra I probably wouldn't like it any more than I currently like my Terrova, but I doubt I would ever want to take a step back to the Terrova afterwards. It would be interesting to see if anyone went with the Ulterra and wished they went with the Terrova. Those cases could be a bit more telling. Quote
MI.Kayaker Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I really liked my Ulterra until I deployed it off the front of my boat last weekend.... *was recovered 1 Quote
Clint C. Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Love my Ulterra! To be more specific.. The power trim on it is a life saver for me. So many shallow channels here and i can raise it higher when needed it. 1 1 Quote

rosshilk Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 Spend the money and get the Ultrex. My father did and it is incredible. The spot lock works great and the foot pedal reacts much like a cable drive. I can feel where I am driving pretty well without paying attention to trolling motor head. 1 Quote

If I were choosing between the Ulterra and the Ultrex, the Ulterra would come on on top in every way. The prices are about the same but the Ulterra has a low profile foot pedal, wireless remote control, power trim and auto stow/deploy. No contest. 1 1 Quote

jbmaine Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 I don't know your specifics but I'm also setting up my " last boat ever " and I have a bad back. I'm going with the Ulterra. The last thing I want to do is ruin a day of fishing because I ginched my back pulling up a trolling motor. Jim 1 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted October 21, 2017 Super User Posted October 21, 2017 Ulterra or Terrova? Neither. Go with the Ultrex. Quote
clh121787 Posted October 21, 2017 Posted October 21, 2017 Ultrex>fortrex>ulterra>terrova . used them all. Cable steer is king. Quote

Jim There is almost no weight stowing my Terrova manually with it's lift assist. I prefer to keep my equipment as simple as possible to sidestep future mechanical issues. The last thing I want to do is ruin a day of fishing because my self-stowing trolling motor seizes and won't stow... oe Quote
Super User Further North Posted October 21, 2017 Super User Posted October 21, 2017 (edited) I've had both; I prefer the Ulterra. While the self deploy is nice, it's the power trim that seals the deal for me. Being able to run super shallow is awesome. I've never understood the "need" for the supposed fast response of cable steer...but that probably has to do with how I fish...and being able to steer and trim up the trolling motor from anywhere in the boat is unbeatable. One thing I don't like: the 112 thrust, 36 volt version with iPilot and link is only available with a 60" shaft. If I recall correctly, you are getting a boat with a deeper hull than mine so that should not be an issue for you. If they made an Ultrex with power trim, I'd be all over it. Edited October 21, 2017 by Further North Effin' autocorrect...should make more sense now. Quote

The Ulterra has a manual override if it were to fail Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 21, 2017 Super User Posted October 21, 2017 I got the name wrong. Ultrexwould be my preference. Sorry about that! Quote
