Hey guys,

I don't wanna drop too much money at the moment, so I am torn between the okuma GS series A in the heavy version (1-6oz), the xtra heavy version (2-10oz) or the dobyns fury 806 (2-8oz). I will be mostly throwing hardbaits in the 2-4.5oz range, but also will throw a hudd 68 and maybe 8 inch. Can the dobyns /okuma xh handle the lighter baits in its range effectively? If so, im gonna go with one of those. Just seeing if anyone has input on one or both of these rods.

Thanks

Also, I emailed dobyns so ill see what they say if they respond.

I have the GS H 1-6oz and if you stick with 2-4oz hardbaits I think you will like it. It has a lot of flex and IMO is not great for jig hook style baits like hudds. I also think the rating is too generous. It's more like a 1 - 4 oz rod.

Same can be said of the 806.

Call Dobyns, they should be back from US Open today.

Im starting to look as well. Anyone have any experience with the daiwa dx swimbait rod? Extra heavy is 3 to 10 oz baits and extra extra heavy is 4 to 15 oz (if i remember correctly).

If this was in response to my post....i want to get into bigger swimbaits. Is it possible to have one set up that will effectively fish baits from 2 to 3 oz all the way up to 8 or so oz (possibly up to 10/12 inch swimbaits). I see alot of people say that certain rod ratings are not accurate (usually handle less than what is advertised). So would it be feasible to do all this on one rod? Or better off 2 rods (one up to 5 or 6 oz and one heavier)? The rod i buy will be strictly swimbaits.

Trying to use one rod for baits that range from 2 to 8 oz. is always going to be a compromise.  Think about how just a half ounce difference affects a MH jig and worm rod.  You're asking too much.  If you're primarily throwing 2-3 oz., then the GS heavy would suit you.  I have that rod, and it's a good start.

With swimbait rods it's better to go XHeavy with brands like Irod and Dobyns if you plan on using lures 4 oz to 7 oz most of the time and 2 to 3 oz lures occasionally. XH rods can cast lighter lures but MH and H struggle to cast the 4 to 7 oz lures.
