YaknBassn Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 I'm looking to buy some new gear for punching. I'm just looking for some generally recommendations on rods, reels, hooks, etc. I've really grown to like the Invoker lineup from Ark Rods, so Im leaning towards their 7'4" Mag Heavy rod. However, I've heard countless people recommend the Tatula rods, so I'm looking hard at their 7'4" Frog rod. As far as reels go, I don't really know what to go for. I've thought about snatching up another Revo STX 3 while they're cheap, but again, I keep looking at the Tatula lineup. What are the key differences in all of the models? There are so many options, between the SV, 100, CT & Type R, it's a little overwhelming. Which better suits the purpose of punching? Quote
Finnz922 Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Bub's Punch Rod and Fred's Magic Stick from Irod in their Genesis 2 lineup are worth a look. My reel is a Daiwa OG Zillion 7.1. I Iike 80lb for punching. Though 60 or 65lb would work most of the time. Right now I am using Sunline FX2. For hooks I like Trokar Monster Flipping Hooks. I like the Strike King Slither Rig in 1-1/4oz occasionally i will go down to 1oz or 3/4oz depending on the vegetation. I only use black and blue or Green Pumkin for colors. As far as the Tatulas are concerned, i wouldn't get an SV for punching. I would look at the 7.3 or 8.1 in the CT lineup. The Type R is cool looking, but not worth the extra coin. The 100's are bigger. I would look for the Zillion Twing 100 if you like the bigger reel otherwise the Tatula CT's are the way to go. Also don't overlook the Fuego CT. In my opinion its every bit as good as the Tatula and no Twing. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 I have the Tatula frog rod and think it's too short and stiff to punch with. Have you looked at the Daiwa HD 200 reel? I love that reel a lot. For rods I like longer ones with a softer tip and fast reels with high drag. I used the STX for many years to flip and punch with, great reel. Quote
NathanDLTH Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 I’m here for the information, but why not use a Tatula SV for punching? Not enough capacity? Quote

That, along with being short, I don't really like anything longer than 7'6". The reel you're referring to is a Tatula correct? I've checked them out. A little more than I wanted to spend, but not out of the question. I've never personally fished a Daiwa reel, but they seem to get a lot of love. Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Yeah out of a yak might get tricky with a longer rod. The HD I suggested is indeed a Tatula. I picked both of mine up on eBay from authorized dealers for $105 each. Quote

No, it has more to do with the casting ability of the SV spool you won't feel that with a 1 - 2oz weight. You will be wasting money on technology won't really be able to shine. I'm sure someone has a SV for punching, it's just not for me. The SV is better suited for casting techniques IMO. Quote
Super User Catt Posted October 20, 2017 Super User Posted October 20, 2017 Powell Max 3D Mag Medium Heavy Extra Fast 7' 7" lure weight 1/4-2.0 oz. This rod will turn big fish fast ? Quote
Stephen B Posted October 20, 2017 Posted October 20, 2017 I think the Tatula frog rod will be too light for your punching needs. Anyways, Let me know if I can help out any. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted October 22, 2017 Global Moderator Posted October 22, 2017 To me, as long as you use a high speed, well built reel that can be locked down you can use it to punch. Line capacity and casting ability doesn't matter as you're only gonna be pitching or flipping when punching. I only use Trokar TK 130 hooks, either 4/0 or 5/0 depending on what I'm useing. Since rod sensitivity is purely suggestive, use the highest quality, most sensitive, balanced rod you can buy. I don't use any Tatula product so can't help you there...But a lot of folks here swear by them. Mike 1 Quote
kingmotorboat Posted October 23, 2017 Posted October 23, 2017 Dobyns savvy 766 on their site for 100. Rep sample. People knock the sensitivity but I've had zero issues. I love the 766 and also have A 733 and a 705 on the way Quote
