I have reduced my calories. I will not gain weight over the winter this year, like I usually do. Hopefully, by the spring I’ll see real results. I am at a lot more calories burned and miles ran in 2021 than I had in 2019 and 2020. So I’m on the right track. The problem with progress is it slows progress. 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted November 3, 2021 Author Super User Posted November 3, 2021 After more than two weeks out of the gym, that actually seems much longer, I've started getting back into it; all be it slowly. First few workouts back are always just a little more than a warm-up. As my humanness re-acclimates to the process & the stress, I'll begin to turn it up. Yesterday was sort of a mid-level deal as far as intensity goes and it went well despite still staying on the safe side. As always, the dirty little secret that will forever be a part of effective resistance training is DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness. And man am I feeling it this morning. Certainly not the first time and won't be the last. No way to avoid it really. Learning to recognize it and perhaps know it's coming while being willing to cope with it is all part of the commitment this deal takes. Still don't really like though. When added to just the everyday Old Guy body soreness, it certainly get's my attention. Stay Strong A-Jay     1 Quote

Unfortunately this humanoid had to basically start over after changes in summer and fall work schedule. I had to go back out to the field to take over a project that was behind schedule. Anyway, glad that's over.  I didn't stop working out but had to go into an abbreviated workout mode. I guess it's something but I'm not sure there was any benefit to a reduced workout load.  Nutrition went sideways as well.  I jumped back on the train last week and will start ramping up intensity. Nutrition is coming along, although it always seems to lag. My body always resists changes in the way fuel is being pumped in and out.  Glad to see you back at it. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted November 23, 2021 Super User Posted November 23, 2021 Well at 61 and still working out, some regression has creeped in. My brother and I have been mtnbiking for 30+ years and I finally had to resort to an E-mtnbike to keep up.  To my defense and not making excuses, he's 57 and stands 5 ft 9 145lbs and is a roofer and a logger to give you an idea of his physical condition.  He looks like a more southern version of AJ. Lol Another major component to staying fit is motivation, a must have. Cheers     2 Quote

Thanks and right back at ya my friend. During the somewhat rare times I'm not deep into a training mode, I usually relax my dietary standards a bit, but this time I sort of went a little overboard. OK - Off The Rails . . . And even after all these years it still surprises me at how long it takes to get the kind of lean I like, but how fast it all goes almost completely away. Been riding the calorie deficit train for a couple of weeks or so now and that trip will need to continue for some time. But I like it; in particular the results. And I have to pass this on . . . . I've been running the Brig-20 deal for all of this come back trail, a month or so now. GAME CHANGER If you're not familiar with this deal, check it out. The best way I can describe this is -- and this is no joke. After 40 Plus YEARS OF 'WORKNG OUT' and suffering a number of life altering injuries in the process, I wish I had this information from the start. While some of this was and is available in other formats, Doug Brignole's presentation of this stuff literally blew my mind and I feel somewhat embarrassed at how ineffective I probably was for all those years. I sincerely hope that peaks your interest.  I'll be dropping a video or three of this type of training in the immediate future, as soon as I can get off 'the fat boy program'. Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 23, 2021 Super User Posted November 23, 2021 @A-Jay, I was being polite when I said my nutrition went sideways, it was more like you and an Ozzy Osbourne thing: Went off the rails of the crazy train.  I'll be checking that book out for sure, please keep me informed with your results. I've been employing more total body/complex type workouts. Still a bit pressed for time, so I feel it's the best way to get more strength endurance & conditioning in to drop the fat percentage back.  Surprisingly I feel as healthy and strong as I ever have right now, but I just feel like I'm carrying excess fluids...bloat. If that makes sense?  Oh well, I've gotten back after it and thought of this thread. Good luck on your journey back.  @Bird, Regression seems like it's part of the game. For me, my body always fights to get back to a certain point...stasis. I'll let my guard down and regression sets. Only takes a couple of weeks for the use it or lose theory to set in.  Good luck on your journey as well. 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted November 23, 2021 Author Super User Posted November 23, 2021 Been working on a Total Re-Boot exercise wise. The Brig-20 has been my motivation. Loaded with Isolation work. It's not 'just another workout program'. A good bit of this is somewhat familiar. However, This is a completely different overall approach from MOST ALL traditional resistance Training including all The Compound Exercises I've previously performed. And I mean for DECADES. Still fine tuning the training sequences & exercises to get the most out it in the home gym, but I Really Like where this is headed. My joints are very happy. More to follow soon. Here's a sneak peak at my leg workout from this morning. A-Jay   1 Quote

Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 23, 2021 Super User Posted November 23, 2021 I bet! The narrow stance on the squatting exercise along with lunges oughta get those quads smoking! ?  I know he mentions that you lose like 20% of quad activation as it transfers to your glutes, I'm assuming that why you're not dropping to parallel or below? Just spit ballin here. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted November 23, 2021 Author Super User Posted November 23, 2021 And this is where that video is invaluable. I am trying to lean back and make that more of a sissy squat. Easier with the lighter weights but tougher as I go up. I will need to clean that up. I do have the option of using the cables which work well. I have been trying that lever arm version as it just feels smoother. I'll get it figured out. Old school squats are out of the question for this guy. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 23, 2021 Super User Posted November 23, 2021 My latest book I bought was George Hackenschmidt's The Way To Live and his squat style was with light weight and really focuses on the quads with little glute activation.  I know you know the Hack Squat with the weight behind you. Kind of has that sissy squat affect where you trying to stay more upright as you drop down.  Good stuff here A-Jay...always enjoy talking fitness with you. ? 1 Quote

You know I love it too. During the Sissy Squat, when my glutes / hips stay high enough, there is little to NO activation there. Total Full Length Quad Blast (with no hip, back or knee pain). But as soon as I lean forward and they drop, even a little, the exercise gets considerably easier. Which tells me those big ole glutes are firing. My pride says load it up and just squat that deal, but I can train my glutes far more directly with those step back lunges, especially with my opposite leg elevated on that block. A-Jay  1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 24, 2021 Super User Posted November 24, 2021 @A-Jay, are you doing any correctives?  I find myself doing some at the end of my workout. Currently I’m dealing with some pain on my outside elbow and it causes pain in between my ring and middle fingers.  Doc had a nerve study done on me told me it was an overuse injury and to rest the arm.  I found that by doing a chest opener has really helped. Still have a little pain there but nothing like it was this past summer/early fall when I wasn’t doing correctives. 1 Quote

Still have a little pain there but nothing like it was this past summer/early fall when I wasn’t doing correctives. I do not do correctives. As a 'veteran lifter', what's busted is busted . When we train long enough and with the loads necessary to result in strength and or hypertrophy gains, there's going to be some carnage. If you choose to purchase and read Mr Bridnole's book, what you may find is that many 'compound exercises', can & do cause much of what we suffer from.  Asking joints to perform under load over and over in a manner that is biomechanically counterproductive is where a good bit of 'over use' originates. (Exception may be if there is a Giant increase in workload, like going from 3 sets to15 in one workout.  That can jack some stuff up too.)   Unfortunately, I am the Poster Child' for all of that. There 's a VERY GOOD CHANCE that the Brig-20 done right and over time, can seriously help and allow our bodies to heal from many of these nagging injuries. If there's any chance at all, I believe this deal is the way to go.  Since I started this deal, most ALL of my post workout DOMS has been in the targeted muscles with very little if any in my joints and or associated connective tissue. That a big deal and quite a change from most every workout I've done, especially those that included compound exercises: which was just about all of them. Food For thought. A-Jay  1 Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted November 24, 2021 Super User Posted November 24, 2021 I have more vascular and/or neurological issues in my arm. Doc says to keep doing the correctives if it alleviating the pain...So 5 min of corrective it is. ? 1 Quote
