I have a nephew who developed a weight problem. He's not active on his job, so that doesn't help. He's lost 19 lbs in 1 month by not drinking any soda. No cokes, root beer nothing. I've lost 7 lbs by having a lighter breakfast, with some exercise too. I've always loved my bacon and eggs, but now, a bowl of oatleal, a bananna, or a piece of toast gets me by. I don't miss a big breakfast much. I can still have one on occasion as a treat, but that's it. And, no more fast food breakfast sandwiches. I didn't realize how much those things slow you down, and your usually hungry again within 2 hrs. Not good food for a long day.

I ate a burrito the size of a throw pillow yesterday for lunch.  It had avocado in it, so I'm sure that was healthy choice. :P

My younger brother (57 years old) who lives a life style that I think I can safely call The Polar Opposite of mine, had a heart attack yesterday - pretty bad.

He's in ICU and will be for a while.

I've been trying for over 40 years to convince him to turn that ship around - he didn't want to hear it.

He's being told now that he's going to need to make a lot of changes moving forward in order to survive.

Hope he will do it and that it's not too little too late.

Seems hard to undo 50 plus years of counter productive behavior.

I rarely eat breakfast and on weekends I’m usually standing there with my foot on a trolling motor pedal for most of the day and I typically don’t take any food. I’m going to try eating every 3 hours (if I can afford it $) and see if I notice some positive changes. I Already had a granola and chocolate milk for breakfast Today  (although I did pull my work van into a gas station to purchase it )..... Thanks for the inspiration A-Jay. I usually just drink a few cups of black coffee for breakfast. I’ve kind of been the same body shape since 8th grade, 6’1” and somewhere between 180 and 200. Not obese but I’ve always carried around some extra and always eat whatever I see. And apparently I go way too long without seeing food a couple times a week. Now that I think about all my skinny friends are eating constantly

I wish him a speedy recovery.  It's been almost 8 years since my little CV event.  The changes aren't all that hard.  It's juts a mindset.

My mom has had a few minor events and now she can’t have nearly the amount of sodium she grew up cooking with. You should see her angry stare when she shows me the tiny salt shaker the doctor recommended for her haha

I rarely add salt to my food.  Most of it comes with the salted butter, if that's in the recipe.

After years of me raiding everyone's fridge whenever I visit, scarfing down whatever I could find, kids school lunch, that nights dinner, all their left overs, didn't matter -  I just needed to eat.

Now when I visit family & friends - the first thing they like to tell me is what they have for me to eat while I'm there.

The joke of 'Feed A-Jay" runs rampant . . . .

When we go out to eat, after everyone is done, we do the plate rotation, and the human dumpster takes over.

I hate to waste food. That attitude was taught to me by depression era grandparents. I did the human dumpster thing for years mainly for guilt of throwing away food.

Sorry to hear about your brother A-Jay.

Not a bad system..... I love to go to my relatives houses and founder on their food until I'm so stuffed I have to lay on the floor. Here's me and my brother after Thanksgiving at Mom's place this year. Food coma. We did that almost every night growing up and mom would get upset and say "boys i spent a fortune on all this furniture and here you are laying on the floor"

Perfect - I can't really do the food coma any more although growing up in an Italian Family, it was pretty much a requirement.

Now it's more about driving distance.

By the time we get there - I'm Staving Marvin !

My wife has Chemo every 24 days.

Tell her to hang in there. My wife battled breast cancer for two years. Her checkup three months back was clean and she has to go back once a year now.

BTW, my own physical therapy is going well and I should be back on the weights and the paddle come spring. Been looking at machines to take the place of the free weights, hope I can find one that does it all. I'm going to miss throwing iron around, but the machine route is probably safer.

Thank you ~

Glad to hear the Mrs. is getting a clean bill of health and that you're on the mend and on schedule.

As for a Home Gym - they've certainly changed and improved quite a bit over the years.

Still, it's hard to find one that truly does it all; but I believe you can come very close.

I purchased the unit I still use today in 2009.

Building a home gym at 50 years old seemed like a decent way to all but eliminate any excuses.

I had some space restraints so that played a role in my purchase.

The unit in the link below is what I have - although it looks like it's changed a bit in the last 10 plus years, seems very close.

  I can recommend it.

https://www.powertec.com/workbench-levergymr

The unit in this link seems bigger and perhaps offers more in the way of exercise variations & options.

It's clearly taking up more space too.

https://www.powertec.com/workbench-multisystem

As for missing throwing around Iron - I know what you're saying and had the same feelings and reservations before my purchase as well.  What I've come to believe is that my structure benefits from the challenge offered by experiencing resistance on a routine basis.  But it does not matter what form that resistance come from.

As long as it is applied safely & is sufficient to require adaptation, it does the job.

Good Luck

I like how the Powertec is designed and I can use the plates I already have. The attachments are going to drive the price up.

Yup ~

You can always start with a basic set up and add what you find you may 'need' later.

Do you recommend Talons or Power Poles with that unit?

Very true.  I would not spend one cent on a home gym or gym membership, but I have no problem paying in flesh at the skate park.  Pretty sure the net gain is the same for my own expectations.  I don't think the skate park alone would meet yours.  It keeps me in shape, and it's fun for me.  Just gotta figure out how to mount 8' Talons to my deck to keep me upright.
