Newby at Painting Cranks

I picked up my first airbrush this year and decided to try my luck and painting crankbait.  Good thing fish don't care about how pretty they are.

I get the depth by layering the colors or over reducing the paint.

I've never done this before so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. What exactly is layering as far as painting goes? I think I know but figured I'd ask.

Layering is where you paint a base coat then use a different color or colors to get the desired outcome you want.  On the two baits attached below I coated the entire bait in yellow then painted the belly orange.  On one of them I wrapped netting material around it and reduced the black paint for the fade down the side.

What are some good airbrush set ups for beginners? I'm looking to get into doing replica fish and maybe a crankbait or two. I've seen some on line that have the compressor 3 airbrushes and paint for anywhere between $100-300 but I don't know if they're any good or those are high end (I doubt it). What works for you guys. I thought the $100-150 range wasn't too bad.

I started out with a Paasche Talon and used my own pancake compressor.  All I had to do was order a moisture trap to control the air pressure.  I think personal preference plays a huge part in which brand is better than the other.  Recently I bought a cheap airbrush just to use for all my base coats.  I paid less than $30 for a master airbrush and to be honest it works better than my paasche for half the cost.  The only difference between the two that I have is the paasche can paint thinner lines.

Not sure how you could critique these paint jobs. Especially being new to airbrushing. They look dynamite! Very nice job!

When I first started to airbrush I ordered an entire kit off of Amazon. It came with a compressor, 2 gravity fed airbrushes of different diameter, 1 airbrush with the jar (I actually still use that thing for base coating)... and several bottles of paint I think for around $150. Get a kit like that and some cheap blanks to start with. It will get addictive. You can also check out lots of a guys painting baits on youtube and can learn some techniques and how to do different baitfish patterns and stuff there.
