BradleyB Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 Listen folks, three days ago I bought my first Whopper plopper. Let me just say WOW!!!! I've caught more fish in a single afternoon of 2 hours with it than a full Saturday without it. Yes it is a little pricey but if you want to catch the bigger bass then it well worth the price. I'm a believer in this top water bait and stand by it. I throw the 110 the action it puts out just on a steady retrieve is awesome, now as you use it you'll learn a few tricks with it. Tight Lines my friends. Quote

I stopped using buzzbaits and my KVD Sexydawg because of how effective they are. There just aren't too many days when bass won't hit a Whopper Plopper. Quote
Jim Sutter Posted October 16, 2017 Posted October 16, 2017 I even caught a channel cat on one today. Quote

I bought a couple last spring and I have used them somewhat regularly most of this season with minimal success. The lure itself is very durable and built well but I just haven't caught that many fish on them. I do a lot better using a buzz bait. 1 Quote
BassB8Caster Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 I have a 130 in loon and havent done very well. Do i think it will work? Yes. Maybe this fall when the big girls want a big meal. Problem is, i find it hard to fish anything besides my spro 40 rat in morning dawn. Slow retrieve just getting that "S" motion....bass cant resist. A much better producer by far for me. Quote

Agreed. So far it fits a small niche for me between a buzzbait and a spook. Basically if I need to make some commotion on top, but want to be able to stop the bait and it's too difficult or windy to walk a spook. Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 17, 2017 Super User Posted October 17, 2017 I love the Whopper Plopper but I've got to say that lately it's been more "miss" than "hit". I bank fish and almost all of the strikes I have had have been in open water. I don't think I've ever had a strike fishing parallel to the shoreline. Â I've fished the 90 size but any tiny little weed will foul the rotation and because of that it's not ideal in the lagoons I fish. So I stick with mostly the 110 size and the occasional 130 but they are hard to land soft so I try and cast well beyond my target area so I don't scare off any potential fish. Who knows, it probably still scares off fish further down from my target area. Â Still, it's my favorite topwater and the strikes on it seem to be more violent than on frogs or buzzbaits. And just about every outing I throw the Bone and Munky Butt 110's. Here's hoping they produce this weekend! Quote

I'm with you on this one. 1 Quote
HookRz Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 The plopper is a good tool to have in the box, but not magic. Great for pulling fish up from the deep. And the little 90 is a killer river Smallie bait. But replace the buzzbait? Sorry, but not so in my opinion. The thing catches weeds you never knew were there! 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 17, 2017 Super User Posted October 17, 2017 I lost my second Whooper Plopper on the Chickahominy River this weekend to go along with the one I lost the previous Sunday.  And yes, they can be bass magnets.  Now to force myself to hit Green Top or BPS and replace the ones I lost.  How did I lose them? By casting too close to the bank at low tide. I could not get the boat close to get them unsnagged.  The fun of fishing!!! Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted October 18, 2017 Super User Posted October 18, 2017 They are pure gimmick and do not catch fish at all when other lures aren’t working.  PM me to get my address to send all your unwanted Ploppers to.  Thank you - -  3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 18, 2017 Global Moderator Posted October 18, 2017 They are simply the best thing going for me all year at one of the lakes for smallmouth. I had several trips with 3 guys, all throwing ploppers, all catching fish at a fever pitch. Your results may vary, but there's a reason there's over 20 of them in the boat. Quote
Pro Logcatcher Posted October 18, 2017 Posted October 18, 2017 Whopper Ploppers are decent baits! I rarely use buzzbaits now. Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 19, 2017 Super User Posted October 19, 2017 I've seen in this and other posts that there are a bunch out there that have never had much - if any - success on the Whopper Plopper and there may be a simple reason for that. Color choice. Â When I bought my first two WP's I bought one in bone and one in Loon. That was last spring and to this day I have not even had one strike on the Loon while on the same sized Bone I've caught a ton of great sized fish. But if I had only purchased the Loon that day I'd be one of those saying it's not such a great lure. Â So if you're not having any luck you may want to try it in another color before you give up on it. Quote

Loon is probably the only one that makes a big difference in color since it's black and all the other colors are a silver or white color. I have used monkey butt at the same time as my fishing partner has been using loon though on a stained lake and we were both catching fish. In clearer water the dark vs. white may make more of a difference with the WP. BassB8Caster Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 I have a 130 in loon. Prior to buying, my research seemed to show more people had success with that color than others. So thats what i went with. I really have not had much luck with it. So.....if we go with the idea its the wrong color, what do you guys feel is throwing the fish off. We know the action and draw power of these baits. I know im around bigger fish (not that size really matters). In my head, i would think it would look like a wounded bird, rat etc that is dark colored. Am i off base? So would this suggest that fish dont want to eat a bird if they dont have to? On the other hand, i get tons of action with the spro bbz1 rat in morning dawn size 40. Anyone have more insight on the color idea? Quote

Anyone have more insight on the color idea? Don’t worry about the color. I don’t believe bass analyze their food before they eat it to determine if it’s the right species. On occasion, there may be lakes where fish show a preference for a particular color, but no one can predict what that color might be. You just have to keep throwing the bait you have with some patience. It’s a proven lure. The day you threw it the bass may just not been interested in topwaters. Keep trying. The next day you go out might be the best day you’ve ever had. Quote
BassB8Caster Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 You do hear this alot and i agree. One other odd situation i had with color had to do with my spro rat. The morning dawn comes with a yellow tail on it with 2 purple replacements. After so many catches, my yellow tail was damaged enough to be unusable. So i put on the purple tail. I could not get any bites on it. Got some replacement yellow tails and i am back to catching them on it. An odd fluke? Probably. Slightly interesting though. But i do agree that the action of these baits is too good to not get strikes from an aggressive fish. As fishermen we can all agree how hit or miss they can be from one day to the next. Quote
GorillaBass Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 I can't believe you guys have so much success w/ it. Where I fish I never got a hit, not even once.. I hate saying this, but I've had 4, lost 3, one is broke because i smashed it in the side of the boat casting like the idiot I am .. who also hooked his gf last Friday while casting, thats a different thread. Â but between the 3 I lost I casted quite a bit and never a single hit.. ive caught monsters on buzzbaits, I love them way more Quote
RB 77 Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 They work and they work well. No doubt about it! Quote

Were you using different colors and sizes?   The Whopper Plopper is way more versatile than a buzzbait. It can be cast way farther, can be used at a far wider range of cadences, can be stopped and go'd, and has 2 treble hooks versus 1 hook. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted October 19, 2017 Super User Posted October 19, 2017 I have the WP in Bone and Bluegill colors. I have caught LMB, SMB and Pickerel on them. As a matter of fact just yesterday I caught my PB Chain Pickerel on the Bluegill one. Â Are they magic? No. Do they work, yes. One of the best topwater lures I have the patience for. Patience is the key. I was out for 4 hours yesterday drift fishing a river casting at anything that looked promising. I caught 2 Pickerel in 4 hours. Took a lot for me to keep casting and not pick up a Ned rig and change that 2 to a dozen or more SMB dinks. 1 Quote
