SWVABass Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 Guys I have a bps pro qualifier the one that was just discontinued. Last time out the line guide hung up on the right side and won't come back across. I clean my reels 3-4 times a year. Is it a tension issue or am I needing to replace something? Thanks in advance,,, Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted October 14, 2017 Super User Posted October 14, 2017 Pull it apart and most likely you will need to replace the worm gear or line prawl. Different names for the same part. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 14, 2017 Super User Posted October 14, 2017 worm gear and line pawl are not the same part. Top part in the picture is the pawl. Bottom part it the worm gear There could be junk built up on the right side of the worm gear or the pawl itself could be worn. Unscrew the pawl cap and pull the pawl out of the housing. Make sure you don't lose any spacers that are under the cap. clean it off. With the pawl out, inspect the worm gear itself that the pawl guides itself left and right. If there's something stuck in there, clean it out. If you are cleaning your reels 3-4 times a year, you should be pretty well versed in breaking them down and removing the worm gear. I would recommend doing that. However, if your definition of cleaning a reel is wiping it down and adding oil/grease a few times a year to spots, you're doing more harm than good. 1 Quote
SWVABass Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 Never broke them down that far. Usually I'm cleaning the break system and the line guide. Have extremely hard water here and will get build up of calcium and lime if I don't clean it off. @iabass8 thank you for the photos and ***. If I was to need a new pawl or worm gear what recommendations do you have for replacing them? Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 14, 2017 Super User Posted October 14, 2017 I don't know the availability of discontinued BPS reel parts. Site sponsor DVT might know where or how to get them. They are a cheap replacement. I really doubt you need a new worm/pawl gear. It's possible but I would bet a good cleaning / break down will fix your issue. There's 43452345234 videos on youtube on how to do it. It's a pretty simple process and your reel will be better than new. If you aren't comfortable doing it, send it to DVT. Might be a hair over 20$ total. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted October 14, 2017 Super User Posted October 14, 2017 Bass Pro has a reel service offering in their catalogs and presumably on their web site. Why not go there with a BPS reel? Make sure it's not simply the pawl nut backing off which will allow the pawl to come out of engagement with the worm gear. The pawl and worm gear get the most crap, and are the most likely system to fail. I always lube them more often than the rest of the reel. Also, if the pawl were to freeze up and not pivot within the nut it would freeze the whole reel up. If that is what you are experiencing, don't force it. 1 Quote
SWVABass Posted October 14, 2017 Author Posted October 14, 2017 No the reel will still wind, just like it is not catching. I'll try breaking it down next week or to and see what I come up with. I want to learn to work on them, nearest bass pro is a good 8 hr drive. Quote

This ^^^^^ Make sure you screw paw cap tight, loose paw will not catch into worm gear right. This is another part that most DIYers forget about it. You should lube worm gear every now and then. Some use heavy grade lube but I use grease. Quote
papajoe222 Posted October 15, 2017 Posted October 15, 2017 Check that the line pawl cap is tight as mentioned. If so, try removing it and letting the pawl fall out. Slide the line guide assembly to the center and replace the pawl and cap. Now turn the reel handle. If it, the line guide, moves to the side and hangs up, the pawl needs replacing (cheap item). If the guide doesn't move, the worm gear isn't turning and it's an internal issue. Have someone look at it , it may just be a clip has come off the end of the gear and the gearing that turns the worm gear isn't engaging. Quote
