Looking for a rod that I can use for medium swim and glide baits and heavy flipping

Hi all,

Looking for a rod that I can use for medium swim and glide baits and heavy flipping.

I am currently using a Okuma Scott Martin TCS Casting Rod 7'3" Heavy that is rated for 1/4 -2 oz but it is a bit underpowered for the swimbaits that I am throwing and also is a bit too short in length.

Baits that I looking to throw:

Swim-Glide baits
* Huds 68

* Duel Hardcore Twitch'n Ninja Glider

* Team Leader Baits Bad Boy Glide Bait 7"
* Mattlures Ultimate Bluegill Series Swimbait

Punching/Flipping
* 1-1.5oz Jigs / Weighted plastic


The rod needs to be relatively light (for the flipping part) and I would prefer a longer handle.


Here are some options that I am considering:

Price point should be under 200 USD.

Handle lengths for swimbait rods and flipping are pretty different, that's something you might want to look at before trying to do both with one rod.

Are you flippin or pitchin, 2 very different presentation that angler tend to lump together. Flippin is all rod and line, reel plays a minor role. Pitchin is rod and reel casting the lure a short distance.

Swimbaits are completely different from flippin and pitchin making long casts, the rod launching the lure with ease. 

Agree all 3 presentation utilize longer rods and can be heavier lures. If you want a swimbait rod that doubles for flippin, that is 1 option. You have a pitchin pitching rod. 

The Irod 8' Xheavy swimbait will work for flippin and swimbaits you mentioned.

I use the Scott Martin 7' 11" tcs Matt Daddy extra heavy for glides and sometimes punching. It's more of a traditional heavy then extra to me. Super lightweight and tons of backbone. I picked it up brand new on eBay for $89.99 last week.

I like that rod too. I have the Okuma Scott Martin TCS Casting Rod 7'3" Heavy. That is the rod that I use right now for those applications. It is underpowered for anything above 2 oz. I am thinking of transfering the rod to become my Jig, Chatterbait, small swimbait rod and replace it with something beefier from above.

@freelancer27 I toss 3-3.5oz baits on mine no prob. The EVX line in 7' 10" xh is also sweet for the price.
