Largemouth21 Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 I enjoy fishing with poppers and Rapala original floating lures. To get better action i like to use a snap swivel. I recently learned, that that is not such a good idea. i tested them and they break very easily. I learned more about loop knots. They dont look too difficult to tie but the knot strength leaves something to be desired. What do you use? Quote

bagofdonuts Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 I've never had problems with loop knots breaking even on frog gear where you're really horsing the fish out of cover. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 There is very little use for snap swivels in bass fishing. Strong lightweight snaps that enhance the lures action are widely used in bass fishing presentations. Loop knot tied properly like the Rapala knot should work you. Tom 1 Quote
PAbasser927 Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 Sometimes when I am fishing a jig in extremely weedy cover I use a loop knot since the tag end points back to the lure and doesn't catch so much vegetation. I have bent out heavy duty hooks without breaking the knot. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 The only lures I tie with a snap swivel are in-line spiners and I use good quality snap swivels, not the kind of junk you usually find. You can tie a good quality snap and you won't need to learn how to tie loop knots ( which if not tied and tightened properly can be worse than those cheap snap swivels you've been using ). 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 12, 2017 Global Moderator Posted October 12, 2017 I use a Palomar for both kinds of baits listed, no issues. I can tie a Rapala knot, but didn't see a difference except it was harder to tie and the hooks tangled in the line more often. 2 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 If the bait has a split ring then I just use a palomar knot. If it doesn’t have a split ring then I use a Decoy egg snap in size 1-1.5-2. Most baits these days have split rings, so the only reason for a snap (not a snap swivel) is quick change outs of baits. If I had to pick just one size snap then I’d go with the #2 from Decoy. 2 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 All good advise, but I use a lot of snaps. There are many good companies producing them and I have yet to loose one this year. I still retie after a couple fish 4 Quote

Around 2/3 of my baits have a snap on them already. 2 1 Quote

That said, I also use duo lock snaps, and now that I have looked up the Decoy egg snaps, I'd consider them in the future... Quote

I think I tried them all this summer and there's a 50/50 chance of finding the decoy snap on a rod Quote

I have been using Owners Hyper a welded snaps the past 2 years and like them, in the past I used both Dual Lock and Cross lock snaps. The OP is using Rapala original minnow balsa lures and the Rapala loop knot would be a good choice, adds no weight. Loop knots weakness is wear and can flatten the line at the knot, if not tied with care. Tom 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 If you try to pinch open a Speed Clip, then yes, it is one of the most difficult to use. Do not do that. Instead, place the lure eye along the clip eye and wedge it open by pushing down on the speed clip. Simple as pie. 1 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 Just like @Bluebasser86 for those type of lure (swim in straight line) I just tie my reg trilene knot. I only use loop knot for walking lure type. I don't remember when the last time I tie loop knot. just like others I use snap/clip for all my hard lure for the sake of my laziness. I use P-line duo snap since I can get it at my local store, but my next purchase gonna be tactical power clip, it is small and look exactly like paper clip. 1 Quote
moguy1973 Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 I've bought cheapo Chinese snaps off ebay by the 100's and I've never had one open or break on me. Quote

I agree, and for my multi-species fishing, I'd add in the spoons I use for pike and musky. Can't emphasize the quality of the snap swivel enough. Cheap ones are junk and will cost you a quality fish sooner than later. I have been using Mustad Fastach Swivels the past couple years. I tie my pike musky rigs with a main line of braid to about a foot of Tyger Leader (or other tieable leader) with an FG knot, then tying in a snap swivel with a Perfection Loop. Very strong system...Sunday I stuck a Mepps in what think was a sunken tree and wound up breaking the snap itself before the leader or the line broke...I was very surprised...but I had he line wrapped around my hand several times and had to pull really hard to make that happen...I can't believe the hook didn't bend first. 1 Quote
