jon boat

i am thinking buying a 14-15 foot aluma craft jon boat and i was wondering weather if you can actually stand and fish i see fishing youtube videos and they stand but im not sure. also if i built a deck would that be unstable. do you think i could fish it in the California delta ?

Of course you can stand up, the thing is flat just don't try to make a turn at full throttle.

Jon boats have length and width measurements, wider the better.

You don't see many Jon boats on the delta for a good reason, unsafe in windy open water.

thanks i have never seen one on the delta but there some other places i can fish

Bottom wide!

 

Jon boat measurements 

Length: bow to stern 

Beam: gunnel to gunnel (side to side) measured across the top of the boat.

Bottom: as stated, the underneath width 

 

The wider the bottom width the more stable the boat will be at rest!

 

I've fished Toledo Bend out of a 14-16' Jon boat may times, none had a narrower bottom width that 44".

It depends allot on how sure footed you are.  Even my 16ft boat with 60" wide floor moves some.  I have no problem walking, running, jumping, casting, etc on this boat but my dad and some larger fellas have trouble balancing and prefer to stay seated.  I also fish from a 18' by 36" bottom.  I can stand and fish by myself in that boat but if I have a passenger moving around it rocks enough to throw me of balance.  I only use this boat on small rivers so wake and waves are not an issue.

For years, I fished The Great Lakes with a 15' deep-V hulled tiller.  It had a casting deck, livewell, trolling motor and all the electronics I needed to find fish in the big lakes.  I was able to stay out when others would have to turn back, due to the boat being able to handle rough water.  Lastly, this boat was very reasonably priced, and could be towed with any vehicle.

i am looking in to getting a jon boat, does anyone know what are some good some good options (lenth,width,and v or flat bottom) also i was wondering how well you can stand up in one,i have seen people stand and sit but i have never fished out of one my self.lastly what would be a good trolling motor for one? any help would by great.

Just as everyone said, the wider the bottoms, the better and jon boat not very good with wake, wave and wind. I got a 14' 32" width on bottom not very stable. It is okay for myself and my fishing buddy since we learn how to balance each other but we also have too many close call.

Standing on a Jon boat with a lot of wake created by other speed boat nearby is waiting for disasters to happen.

15' Sea Nymph with a 50hp tiller.  I don't remember the model, but it was a nice boat in the mid 90s.  Upgraded to a 17' tiller.  Then an 18' Xpress, and a 21'10" Bullet.  I want to go back to the tin tiller.  I've been doing some shopping.  So far the 1675 Pro Guide fits my criteria.

I have a 1232 flat bottom and love it for one person. If anybody else is in the boat with me it's a little difficult to stand and fish. I would suggest at least a 1436. I use a Minn Kota Endura C2 but it's a 36" shaft and 34# thrust. Definitely want to go with a least a 36" shaft.

I spent a lot of time fishing out of a 14' X 36" jon boat.  If I ever go back to a jon boat it will have a 48" bottom, minimum 14' but preferably 16'.

I fish out of a mirrocraft f3614 which is a deep v aluminum boat, the length is 14' and beam is 63". I stand on the seats currently and can balance well enough even in rough water with all the wake and pleasure boats. I am planning on putting a casting deck on either this winter or early in the spring. don't be afraid of using a little boat they can definitely handle it but they may require a little more work. I would do as others said and get the widest bottom you can that's the most important thing for stability

I've seen a few build ups on this hull.  Must be a Lake O thing?

Mostly in person, but I found this in a google image search.  It's pretty similar to what I've seen.  The box on the port stern is pretty cool.  Reminds me of my old Sea Nymph.

Gregor is a west coast boat made in Fresno, all welded and popular general fishing boats and rental boats.

Valco is another good local boat popular for retal but riveted construction.

Both would be OK on the delta.

I had a 14' Alumacraft V hull with 15 hp, made a small front plateform and mounted a seat on the front bench seat, tiller operated trolling motor on-off switch floor mounted, swivel seat at the rear and ice chest cooler. Only reason I sold this boat was is my current home garage isn't deep enough or wide enough for 2 boats.

I just bought a 16 ft aluminum Jon/bass conversion has a 40hp Mercury Force... I am wanting to redo front and rear decks and not a very good carpenter.. So if I may I would like to bounce some ideas off you follows and see what you thank ok., I am using an Evinrude bow type trolling motor with three forward speeds also reverse. I am thanking of cutting framing and using piano type hinges on two wide doors where deck meets the floor, having them open like a door.. To store all life jackets & vest. On right side have a box type kinda like a locker laying on it's back to store poles and have a turn key lock on it... Now for rear after removing all broken foam in boat thanking of having a hatch type door on storage on both right & left sides in rear corners...If I can place batteries in them with I am running two to make 24volts.., And I want to make a long have type door again with a piano hinge..., Sorry to write so much but what do you thank... Also I have found a decal stripes off for a Tracker bass boat that I want to put down each side of boat with my boat type written in it too, is Aluminum Craft.. Stripe is red and black and my two pole type seats are by Wise and they have a wide stripe like in both back and seat with red and gray so thanking of carpeting floor deck and around steering wheel podium to with some kind of red., Thanks everyone...

Sorry mistaken side right but mint to say left but if there is room on right side before you get to steering wheel podium may try to fit another pole holder locker..
