Big_Easy_Bassin Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Interested in hearing what everyone's ideal setup would be for this technique. Lipless crankbaits, or simply "traps" as I like to call them, are hands down my favorite search bait and one of my all around favorites to throw. I almost exclusively throw a Strike King RES in the 1/4oz size. I'll throw the old Rat-L-Trap every now and then, but I have better luck with the RES. I'm also looking to try out some other brands, especially the Yamamoto and the Spro. I'm currently using an "unnamed" 7' MF Rod that retails in the $70 range that I found on sale (possibly marked wrong) at Walmart for $25, paired with a Daiwa Tatula 100 6.3:1. I've tried all different line types and I like flouro. I personally love P-Line Flouroclear (I think that may actually be a co-poly). Also experimented with everything from 8# to 20# and I usually go with 12#, but I'll bump it up to 15# if I know I will be fishing it slower than usual. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please let me know what you think. I'm always looking to try something different Quote
The Bassman Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I enjoy using my Shimano Aldebaran 50 paired with a Loomis Classic Bass 722 IMX. I bank fish so the 6' rod works best for me. Right now I'm spooled with 10 lb. Big Game but I like to try different ones. Red Eye is one among several lipless that I use. I spin fish a lot and do well with a #5 Rippin' Rap. Quote
Big_Easy_Bassin Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 Not sure what it is about the RES, but it just seems to outproduce others... at least for me. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted October 11, 2017 Super User Posted October 11, 2017 7' MF sounds about right to me. I have been using a 6'6" MF St. Croix Premier with a 7.1:1 Daiwa Exceler for 1/4oz traps. The rod is probably shorter than ideal but I like 'em short and it does the job. 12# Trilene Big Game for me. Beboson Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 Wright Mcgill Rick Clunn Lipless Rod...are great for small lipless to 1/4 - 3/8oz. Problem are will get now one of them... Quote
Super User Spankey Posted October 12, 2017 Super User Posted October 12, 2017 I fish two St. Croix premier Crankbait Rods. A bit more moderate at the tip. $$$ Don't break the bank. I use mine for 1/4, 5/16 and 3/8 crankbaits. Rat-L-Traps being part of that. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 12, 2017 Global Moderator Posted October 12, 2017 I use the same M/F for the 1/4 as I do the 1/2oz. It's a Ethos rod from Academy and it's worked great for traps. It's paired with a Kastking Assassin and 15lb Big Game. Quote
Chrisran99 Posted October 17, 2017 Posted October 17, 2017 Check out Falcon rods. I have a 6'8" M MF Lowrider Salt that I use to throw small traps. It's got a soft tip and good flex but backbone when it's needed. I like it so much I bought one in the XG model for a loner rod and can't feel much difference between the two. 1 Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 17, 2017 Super User Posted October 17, 2017 For small lipless cranks I use a 7'6" Shimano Cumara MedLight Moderate/Fast rod and Core50mg7 and 10# yozuri hybrid ultrasoft or 15# PPS8S. Quote
