jbmaine Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 I always hate to see the season come to a close. When I was younger I ice fished, but as I got older I gave it up. It was taking too much effort to chop a hole in the ice big enough to put the boat in. Especially if you like trolling. 2 Quote

wet_dream Posted October 11, 2017 Posted October 11, 2017 I'm fortunate enough to live by the Jersey Shore and the fall striper run should start heating up as the temperatures begin to drop. I haven't gone freshwater fishing since the Tautog started moving into our jetties. It is bittersweet, but as one season closes, another one opens. 1 Quote

We've caught schoolies all summer in the back bays but can't wait for those bigger ones to get down here. 1 Quote

October and November should continue to be good fishing, but December and early January is when it really sucks up here. Weak ice and bad fishing. By mid-January it should be really nice again. RPreeb Posted October 12, 2017 Posted October 12, 2017 When I grew up in Minnesota (early 60's), guys had their fishing huts out on the ice all winter, with heaters and chairs. They just drove out to the hut to fish, then drove home again when done. Not too rough that way. One hut I visited with a friend was different from the norm. They cut a 3' x 6' hole over about 6 feet of water and spear fished. They just waited for something worthwhile to swim by, then chucked a spear at it. Quote

I've never had to ice fish....I will mention I wanted to try it once but that feeling soon passed. Smallmouth on Norris Lake in winter, flat water, no boats, suns coming up as the fog is lifting......Oh...My...Gosh. Quote
