NashLouie Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Recently we have inherited a large amount of high end fishing equipment. I am now going through boxes of fishing line. When opening some of the packaging it looks like some of it is from the 90's all the way up to last year. Does fishing line expire, or go bad? Most of the line is Fluorocarbon. Looks to be soecifically Sunline brands such as Shooter, Sniper, Machine Gun, and others brands like Spiderwire/PowerPro braids. Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 9, 2017 Super User Posted October 9, 2017 Neither braid nor FC "expire" since they are impervious to what usually destroys other fishing line like nylon, which if not kept under the right storing conditions can degrade, excessive dryness, exposure to ozone or to direct ( UV light ) for extended periods of time causes nylon to become brittle and stiff. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Yesterday I tested some 20 yr old pline fluoroclear - it's been laying in boats or cabinets for years - still 8# break strength - never been in the sun. Quote
Pro Logcatcher Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Some old line I have is brittle and will snap. Make sure to test it! Quote
bagofdonuts Posted October 9, 2017 Posted October 9, 2017 Depends on how it was kept. Best if kept out of sun or excessive heat. Quote

Do I need a humidor for my mono now?? 1 Quote
NashLouie Posted October 9, 2017 Author Posted October 9, 2017 It has been stored in a Rubbermaid container in a temperature controlled house. How do you test break strength? Above someone stated they tested their 8lbs and it broke at 8. Thanks everyone. Much appreciated. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted October 9, 2017 Super User Posted October 9, 2017 Use a fishing scale? 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 9, 2017 Super User Posted October 9, 2017 Welcome aboard, @NashLouie! 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 9, 2017 Super User Posted October 9, 2017 Who ever owned the tackle and line more than likely took proper care of it. Storing FC line is simple kept in original boxes and out of high heat, braid is almost indistructable regarding shelf life. Tom 1 Quote
NashLouie Posted October 10, 2017 Author Posted October 10, 2017 Thanks Tom. The fishing tackle along with the boat was very well taken care of. He definitely took pride in his fishing equipment. Just need time to go through it all. Wish I knew a fraction of what he did. Thanks everyone for the help, and taking the time to welcome me. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 10, 2017 Super User Posted October 10, 2017 Make a list of the rods and reels and maybe we can offer suggestions what to use for various presentations. A very close freind of mine passed and the family liquidated everything before contacting his fishing buddies, custom jig molds and swimbaits it made me sick to learn about it after everything was gone. bagofdonuts Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Saw a tip on an old hank Parker show to use a cooler to store line. I still store all my line in an old stirofoam cooler. Works great. 1 Quote

Tom The family did the complete opposite. They want the tackle/gear to stay in the family. He recreated a bait with his father a while back, and sold them for a while. We haven't started going through all of that stuff yet. Just trying to organize the loose lures, and all of the packages of worms/line. Once we get to the rods and reels I will post them. I know there are a lot of Megabass and Gloomis rods. Expensive stuff when new, but been around a while. Mostly Daiwa reels. Looked like maybe 20-30 of the same reel in particular which was peculiar. bagofdonuts Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 Sounds like top of the line stuff. 1 Quote
MNGeorge Posted October 10, 2017 Posted October 10, 2017 I still use some mono from the late 70's with absolutely no problems...it all depends on how it was stored. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 11, 2017 Super User Posted October 11, 2017 All my line is in boxes, out of the sun, kept in the dark like a mushroom. I have noticed that braid can dryout over time but I don't use it that much. Quote
