I was just curious as to how much people leave on when they do a braid to leader. I'm always worried that I might take too much off and it slip, or leave to much on and effect casting. So I figured what better place to get opinions then on here. I should. Mention I use an alberto knot, would love to use fg but still working at it.

I use the Alberto knot and I trim both tags as close as I can, never had a problem of it slipping.

Its a valid concern and a reason I always put some tension on the line system before final trimming. Not just pulling it tight with a short little 6" of tag in hand but tieing a lure on and gently leaning into it, and then cutting your tag. Playing around last winter I noticed a slight visual difference im the connecting knot vs sinching it up in my lap. Maybe the mono leader contracts or squishes a bit who knows. Im also very picky about not wanting much tag sticking out of the knot and used to really push it.

Now I also tie a seperate knot to kind of finish the Alberto- unsure of the name but google may assist.

Craww thanks for the advice. I'll have to try and find out the finishing knot. I haven't had a leader slip (knock on wood) yet. Like you said it's always in my mind. I always take it as close as I can with thr tag end, I'll have to try tying it it  a knot and see if I notice a difference. I feel like it's a dumb question, but any time you read anything about knots they never say how much to trim.

I guess whwn I say a tag I'm talking fractions of an inch. Like maybe a 1/64 tag if that.

If I had my reels close at hand I would send  a pic of my tag ends. That being said I was reading somewhere the person said fg knot isn't the best for light braid lines (20# or less). Does anyone know if that's true or not? I use 15# 832

I have tied a #15 daiwa j-braid x4 mainline to a 4lb mono leader with no technical issues. Only thing that struggled was my eyes seeing that small diameter line. I believe the braid I was using is similar or smaller in diameter than 832.

Croak you tied it with an fg knot? I can't tell you how many times I've tried that knot and always end up messing it up. I think I usually mess it up during the up and down motion of thr leader.

@gall yes with an fg knot. It's the only connection knot I use. I practiced for awhile before taking it out on the water when I was learning it. For that small of mono I used 30 wraps, just in case. And since it was on spinning gear with bigger guides, I didn't have to worry about knot length. Normal knot ill use 24 wraps (30-50lb braid, 10-17lb leader). Least I've went is 20. I always end with an even number of wraps that way the half hitch knots are easier to tie at the end. And I trim my tags as flush as possible with leader knot. But I really cinch my knots down.

So how you get the coils they always show in the early steps? Every time I do the to rod back to me I never manage to get the coils. Not sure what I'm doing wrong either ha.

I tie a modified Albright, and cut the mono flush with no tag, I finish the braid with 2 Half hitches, and cut that flush as well.

Ps: Alberto is a ***** (unless he's friends with one or more Mods, in which case he's peachie keen swell...)

The only two I use are alberto and FG. For both I trim as close as I possible can. I have never had either slip.

Can one of the r guys who tie fg knot  tell me what I'm doing wrong. I go away and to me like I should and tighten after each wrap but I can't get the braid to coil. I take it up under pull down then down under up. It seems I'm doing something wrong though, I just can't figure out what I'm messing up to not get the coils
