Travlin_Man Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Are there gators or snakes where you plan to use this boat? Quote
Red Posted May 12, 2007 Author Posted May 12, 2007 no gators that i know of and not sure about snakes...lake waco in waco texas is where i would be using it Cliff Quote
fisherboy Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 you could get a kayak for less and make it out alot further. those pontoons are more for drifting like rivers/creeks and stuff. paddling it is not that great. with a kayak you can get alot further and there stable aswell. check academys pelican castaway. its 400 and a great first kayak Quote
gg4709 Posted May 12, 2007 Posted May 12, 2007 Iv'e fished out of a canoe before and its really hard to turn around when you're seated in one postition. I'd get a jon boat with a swivel seat mounted somewhere near the front. Quote
The Unabasser Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Yep....gotta Classic by Cimmaron see avatar...cost me 200 bucks and it works like a charm...I have rod holders built for it, have a trolling motor and a eagle fishfinder on it... Like some said you dont want it where there are gators but here in the northeast its GREAT....don't listen to the haters....they haven't tried it Float tubing and pontooning are becoming more and more prevalent across the country Quote
sacnho Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 They are neat little crafts to fish from and they work well. I friend of mine has one and uses it to float mild river sections with it. FYI samsclub has what looks like the same one for less money http://www.samsclub.com/shopping/navigate.do?dest=5&item=107527 Quote
Red Posted May 13, 2007 Author Posted May 13, 2007 well as far as i know there arent any gators in Lake Waco...the main reason i want it is to just get into a bit deeper water....pretty limited from shore as far as water depth goes....plus it seems like it is very portable and easy to manage....i am sure it must be rough on a windy day tho....thanks for your tips...appreciate it Cliff Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted May 15, 2007 Super User Posted May 15, 2007 Torpedo, if that is what you want, then I suggest you go for it. Bear in mind, it is not a good boat if you are fishing big lakes. I fish from an inflatable raft, so I fish smaller lakes (200 acres or so) or stay very close to the banks on larger ones. On big lakes, it's really not the weather I worry about. It's the yahoos and their great big fast boats that I worry about. They seem to have no idea about what their wake can do to a small-boater, even from 200 yards away. Quote
Red Posted May 15, 2007 Author Posted May 15, 2007 thanks long mike, i did not think of that, and lake waco is 7,000 plus acres...so maybe not the best choice....i am not looking to buy anything soon....just trying to get some ides in my head...i mean i dont even have a truck yet! but hopefully by this time next season i will have some sort of water craft to fish from...thanks again Cliff Quote
rvrnr64 Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 I've never fished from one but saw a group of guys pull in at a boat landing where I was at on a river and they seem to like them. That being said, I would prefer a Pelican,Coleman Crawdad or the Bass Hunter EX from Bass Pro Shops. I had a Pelican which is basically the same as the other two mentioned and it was an awesome boat. The only reason I got rid of it was to get something that cut through the water better so I could go upstream in the rivers here in VA. You can get a Pelican from Dicks Sporting Goods for about $450. I opted for a 50 lb thrust Minn Kota and it moved the boat well in slow moving water and was very stable. Trust me, I took it on rivers that were rolling and got an anchor hung and the thing still stayed afloat with no water entering the boat with three people in it the first time. The first time any of my friends got in it they were skeptical but after going through rapids with ease they soon lost they're fear of it especially when the anchor hung, which happened on two different occasions and with two different anchors, and the boat didn't sink. I didn't even need a truck. I just turned it upside down and strapped it to my roof rack on my Jeep Cherokee. By the way, I now have a Porta-Bote with a 6hp Nisan motor and I am now using a 25lb Golds gym weight lifting plate for an anchor so it wont get hung up. Live and learn. Quote
Guest whittler Posted May 15, 2007 Posted May 15, 2007 They are great to fish from and much easier to handle loading and unloading than a canoe. I outfitted mine with a front trolling motor, depth finder, raised the seat 2" and added a better rear deck for holding the battery. Quote
