Hey everyone,

We adopted a puppy, she's turning 5 months next week, and I want to take her fishing with me every time I can. She's small, weighs about 11 or 12 lbs right now, and is at that stage where she's very curious about everything.

I want to take her and make sure she enjoys being out on the water. I'll be bank fishing, no canoe rides for now ...

Any tips to help getting her accustomed to going fishing? I grew up with a dog that was terrified of water and I really want her to enjoy it.

Here's Ripley, the wee devil :D

Don't force her to get in the water, just let it happen naturally if it happens at all. Not much else to suggest. Some dogs seem to like water and some don't.

Thanks. I guess I'm just worrying about it too much. I'm really hoping she'll become my fishing buddy :)

I understand that, my Golden has been my steady fishing buddy since she was just 4 months old. She just turned 5 last month so she's a seasoned vet now and my good luck charm.

I have two dogs and one fell in my pool and almost drowned when she was three or four months old she never forgot, she is completely horrified to be near any body of water. She’s three years old now.

Like bluebasser already said, just let the fishing trips/swimming thing try to come naturally.  You'll be able to tell pretty quick if she likes it and gets used to it or not.  If not, don't force it.  Some dogs are fine in and around water or in a boat, some aren't.  My dog loves going in my boat but she's a very calm 5 year old labrador that can swim whereas my parent's dog is a hyper-skyper puggle that can't swim and whines a lot so we leave her at home.

Ripley is a good looking pup!  She will be your fishing buddy just because she will want to be where you are.  I just lost my best buddy in June but when I'm feeling ready again I hope my new pal will fish with me too.

Update: you were all right, I was worrying about nothing. Ripley loves water and she's a great fishing buddy!

We managed to go fishing today and both of us had a great time.

Merry Christmas, everyone!
