georgeyew Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I just spooled up my Abu Garcia C4 round reel. I noticed the line bunching up on the right side of the reel, so I hooked the line to a tree and walked the line out and reeled back in....the line is still uneven favoring the right side. I read from other threads that it might be a worn paw. But this is a brand new reel, so it is unlikely that the parts are damaged/worn. Are there other adjustments that I should make/check? Quote
j_blaze14 Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 i had this happen once. line was rolling to the right cuz it was too loose. spool it in with more tension. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Is there a backing knot? Are you accidentally applying side pressure while spooling? Is the pawl cap snug? 1 Quote

Is the pawl cap snug? I am using an arbor knot to tie to the spool (20lb mono). And I am reeling the line straight in as I am walking no real side pressure. I just checked the pawl cap and it is snug. It's not a huge deal. But I am a bit OCD when it comes to stuff like this. Quote
dave Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Most people hold the tension between their thumb and finger. If you are favoring a side, the line will pile to that side. Make sure your thumb and finger tension is being held further away from the the reel dead center. Quote
shackman Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Those type of Abu's are notorious for this. I work on reels and have seen this in new and used ones. Make sure level wind guide is not hanging up and staying longer on the side that it is pilling up on. Just like others said, could be pawl/worm gear issue. 1 Quote
tkunk Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 Sometimes it helps if you loosen your spool tension knob all the way when you spool your reel. 1 Quote
tholmes Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I have a few reels that do that and I just take them out and throw a bunch of long casts. It will level out. Tom 2 Quote

georgeyew Posted October 3, 2017 Author Posted October 3, 2017 Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions. I will use it for a bit and hope that the line will even out. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 4, 2017 Super User Posted October 4, 2017 I had this issue once and it was because my kid who held the spool held it too far to one side. We ran the line out and put it on straight and no issues since. Quote
