Super User bigbill Posted October 1, 2017 Super User Posted October 1, 2017 The other night my local resident 400lb black bear was hooting looking for a friend sort of speak. The problem is the misses was putting out the recycle bin for pickup in the morning. She heard the bear hooting not far away but another answer hoot from another direction. The male bear called 1-800-collect in bear language and he got an answer. I guess we have Bears now just not one bear. we harvested one bear at my camp in vt years ago. It was 5 minutes away from my camp. With small kids at the time I felt safer with it gone. But soon after we had another one take its place. I figure it's easier to live with them knowing there around. Most of the time you will smell them first if the wind is right. one of my favorite fishing spots one bear was sighted near the school not far away. I did hear hooting one time. I had one near my car when I spilt garlic bass scent on my bumper. my point is becareful, be alert, use all your senses it could save your life. my misses carries a bottle of bear spray now when she walks the dog. Plus our dog is the first alert alarm system. It's the time of the year when bears are really active. just beaware, bill Quote
Super User Darren. Posted October 1, 2017 Super User Posted October 1, 2017 DA bears... Indeed. Be careful. We only have bears in the western part of VA, to the best of my knowledge. I remember when I lived in WNY of mountain lions haunting many in the southern tier. Be careful out there!! Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 1, 2017 Author Super User Posted October 1, 2017 I never knew we had so many predators till we put up the trail cam. The bear tracks I seen in the freshly tilled garden and I seen bear scat on my lawn. Quote

Super User Gundog Posted October 1, 2017 Super User Posted October 1, 2017 The state wildlife officers trap nuisance bears from the poconos and release them down where I live in the mountains. Lots of places for them bears to roam but also plenty of garbage for them to eat around town. Most of my neighbors are worried about stray dogs, possums, skunks and such but I tell them not to worry about them. Worry about the bigger critters like coyotes and bears. I tell my neighbors not to put trash out the night before pick up day. Put it out in the morning instead. And always put it in heavy metal cans with tight lids. Most don't listen which is why we get the critters coming into town. Quote

We were in Farmville (Hampden Sydney and Longwood) for some soccer stuff, and there's definitely wildlife there! Quote
david in va Posted October 1, 2017 Posted October 1, 2017 I use to work for Longwood , managed the sports fields. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 2, 2017 Super User Posted October 2, 2017 Most of the bears in Missouri are in the southern half of the state. I still keep my eyes open because you never know when one or two will want to move north. Quote

We actually had a black bear spotted down here, too - during the wildfire in the Dismal Swamp several years back - it wandered up here of all places. As I usually do with wildlife before opening my mouth, I check with the DGIF. Here's the bear map of VA. I am in the "rare/unoccupied" areas...the WHOLE REST OF THE STATE is occupied. I stand corrected, LOL 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted October 3, 2017 Super User Posted October 3, 2017 Got plenty of bears in Fla. The Fwc opened limited hunting back up last year. First time they were hunted since 1994. A semi ran over one about 20 miles from us that was over 600 pounds. We always have a few come into the Jax. area every summer. Its usually males looking for mates. The suburbanites freak out. I think Id rather meet a bear in the woods than a wild hog, although a bear can usually kill a hog. Quote

According to the DEC, they don't exist here, despite numerous sightings, and a few hit by cars. There's some conspiracy theory that the DEC released them to control deer populations. Who knows. 1 Quote

They didn't exist in the Lower Peninsula despite several sightings and pictures. Then one was spotted, photos taken, evidence collected so the DNR had no choice but to admit they're here. "Just passing through" they say. Lol Quote

When I lived there I remember a mother lion and her cubs (IIRC correctly) were living in a barn in Mt. Morris or was it Hemlock (?)... Memory not serving me right now, but it was in the mid 90s. Wouldn't doubt they were released by DEC, but like u say, who knows. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 3, 2017 Super User Posted October 3, 2017 Please, not Hemlock! I fish there all the time. Quote

Super User bigbill Posted October 4, 2017 Author Super User Posted October 4, 2017 seen another bear on the exit ramp on the highway she was getting off. She walked through an intersection with two traffic lights. My doctors office was nearby, she walked through the parking lot. Of course some people were taking pics of her with their phones. A bear can run 35mph in a heart beat. People have no clue how much danger there in to get a picture. Quote
Subaqua Adinterim Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Many bears in the Catskills where I hunt deer. Had a few opportunities to shoot one with my bow over the years, however, What am I going to do with a bear? Had one right under my treestand a few years ago, once it scented me it blasted out of there, shook the ground like a Buffalo; unbelievable how fast these things can move. Here's one of many pictures that I get every year by my treestand in the Catskills, with my game camera. Fortunately, for the most part these are nocturnal during hunting season. There have been sightings in the Hemlock/Canadice area.. The guy that used to watch the Monroe County Water supply finger lakes (seemed like he was there 24/7 - his name was John) told me a few years ago that he saw a bear swim across Canadice. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted October 4, 2017 Author Super User Posted October 4, 2017 We hunted bears for decades. More exciting, more of a rush. I was about 10 to 20' from one in the 6' tall grass. Then a little bird got in the tree I was under and sang it's heart out to the tune go back, danger. That bear went back down the edge of the apple orchard the way he came, then went around the orchard staying in the cover of the woods till he got behind me were he wanted to go. He was a young cub who left the sow. The last time I was up there his scat could fill half a five gallon bucket. He's a big bruin. We drove my jeep as far up into the mountains as far as far as we could go. Then walked a very old logging trail. Only passable on foot. We go where most hunters don't go. We enjoyed stalking the bears. We seen a sows tracks, while her cubs tracks zig zag It's mothers tracks. There was mountainlion tracks following the bears tracks. Since we didn't want to shoot the cub and the sow we backed out of there. They say mountainlions are extinct. I took pictures of the mountainlion tracks next to a pack of cigarettes and sent them to a tracking school student and had them verified as mountainlion tracks. the powers to be say these mountainlions must be released pets. There in vt, ct, mass, Maine I seen the sighting reports. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted October 4, 2017 Super User Posted October 4, 2017 We have bears here in Monterey County, CA. Every once in a while they come down out of the mountains and people go nuts seeing them in town. Pretty cool. Quote
