young bassmaster Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I'm looking into starting to tie jigs. Mostly because I can do it cheaper than buying them and I can fully customize them. I've got brown, black, green pumpkin with black, purple, sapphire blue, orange, and red. What would be some good color combinations to try for different times of the year or just in general 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 30, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 30, 2017 Having been down that road before, don't go too crazy on colors. I used to have all kinds of colors with just slight variations and realized after several years that it was mostly a waste. Not only did those slight variations seem to not make much difference, but I found myself using the same 5-10 productive colors all the time anyways. I do like a few strands of chartreuse in my jigs at times, so you might add that. A couple of my favorite recipes; 1 tab brown, 1 tab green pumpkin, 5-6 strands of blue 1 tab brown, 1 tab green pumpkin, 3-5 strands of orange, 3-5 strands of chartreuse 1 Quote
BarefootBassin Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I wouldn't go too crazy with color variation. A couple variations of brown or green pumpkin will work in almost any situation. I also carry some variation of black, but the browns and green pumpkins are more versatile. You can use different color trailers if you want to vary the color without carrying a hundred different jig colors. The common misconception is that you need to match your trailer color to your jig. Think of color selection in terms of water clarity rather than time of year. Darker colors for stained water and browns and green pumpkins for clearer water. 1 1 Quote

Super User Munkin Posted October 2, 2017 Super User Posted October 2, 2017 Make some in the same colors of the soft plastics you use. Allen Quote
Karma Posted October 14, 2017 Posted October 14, 2017 90% are the same culprits. Green Pumpkin (or some variation of), black and blue (or some variation of) and a few of the brown (or some variation of) patterns. White is fairly popular this time of year. A lot of people go crazy with all sorts of neon chrome, bright chartreuse with metallic. I think 90% of that is just because people like the way they look. Some guys are spending more time shopping the bait stores than they are on the water. There is a reason why these colors are classic and your great grandpappy had them in his tackle box.... they work. Don't over think it. Kind of like the Heddon Torpedo. Everyone's grandpa had some of those in his tackle box. I am pretty sure Moses was catching them out of the Red Sea on a Heddon Torpedo. It was catching fish years before anyone had even dreamed of a whopper plopper. 2 Quote
