Chughes37 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 I'm looking to purchase my first spinning setup, honestly I'm not a fan of spinning reels but I'd like to throw drop shots, and Ned rigs. I'm looking at a 6'10 ML XF action (from a company that can't be discussed on here) but I'm clueless when it comes to spinning reels. I'm looking at the $100 to $150 range for a reel. So what are some good options? Also, I don't know what pound test line for drop shot. But I'm thinking 6 lbs FC for the ned rig Quote
Super User Darren. Posted September 29, 2017 Super User Posted September 29, 2017 Shimano Stradic guy here. You can find them on sale for under $150, specifically the FK models. I have purch'd several over eBay, in addition to DSG and BPS. On a rod that long I'd opt for a 2500 or 3000 (same as 2500 just deeper spool). Daiwa makes great reels, too, as does Pflueger. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 29, 2017 Super User Posted September 29, 2017 I've been using Seaguar Finesse line in 7.2#. Has the diameter of typical 6# line. Feels a lot like Tatsu, handling wise. Quote
PAbasser927 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 For my drop shot/Ned rod I found a new Daiwa Procyon 2500 on eBay for just over $100. I have it spooled up with power pro 10# braid and either a 6 or 8 lb flouro leader depending on the situation. It has been working out great for me. Quote
fishindad Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 Agree that Daiwa spin reels (check out their BG or new Exceler) at the $100-$150 price point are better than what Shimano offers. FYI, In addition to Daiwas I have two Ci4 Stradics so if you spend $200 and up, then it gets more competitive. 1 Quote
Chughes37 Posted September 29, 2017 Author Posted September 29, 2017 Is the XF action ok with either of those setups? Quote
3crows Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 Falcon JC Drop Shot and Finesses rod with Shimano Stradic CI4+. It throws Ned Rigs perfectly fine, small chatter baits and other fun stuff like little weightless worms. I am using Transoptic 6 or 8 pound test mono. Quote

Daiwa is knocking it out of the park right now with $50-$100 rods, and reels. My newest budget friendly spinning combo is a Daiwa Aird-X 7' M/F rod paired with a Daiwa Revros 2000 reel. And I have honestly never been more impressed with a $100ish combo. That rod is every bit the equal of MANY MANY companies $150 rods, and the Revros reel has instantly displaced my old stand by "best bang for the buck" reel..the Pflueger President. I have replaced ALL of my Abu (Vengeance's, Vendetta's, and Veritas's) and Berkley (LR Shock's) rods with Aird-X's and have some of the new Fuego rods sitting here waiting for reels. I think the casting rods are going to get matched with Fuego or Tatula CT's, and the spinning rods with more Revros's, RG's, Fuego's, or the new Legalis LT's 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 30, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 30, 2017 My Ned rod (that is labeled as a DS rod), is a 6' 10" ML/XF, paired with a Pfluegar Supreme XT that's loaded with 10lb KastKing Super Power braid. My DS rod is a 7' 3" ML/F, paired with a 25 size Okuma RTX, spooled with the same line. Quote
PatrickKnight Posted September 30, 2017 Posted September 30, 2017 I run braid to leader on all my rods and for DS and ned rig I use 10 lb 832 to a 6-8 lb leader of what ever fluro I can get on sale or 6 lb Hybrid. For a reel my Daiwa BG 2500 is so good at $100 bucks if I could do it all over again I would buy two more of them instead of my Stradic FK. This coming from a Shimano guy. Quote
Preytorien Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I'd say a good worm/jig rod would do fine. Something in the Med/Heavy Fast range would do good and a 2500 size reel. I'd stick with braid as I do for most of those types of applications. I am currently swooning over YGK Soul X-8 Upgrade in 14lb test. It's like casting spider silk Quote
It'sJason Posted October 3, 2017 Posted October 3, 2017 I like to use 4-8lb flouro for all my finesse spin gear, including DS and ned rigs. For both, I use a 7' ML/F with a 3000 size reel. For the ned rig, I like to step up to a 3000 size reel, and have it be relatively quick. Reason being, a lot of ned rigging is kinda like wacky and flick shake. You're going to get hit a lot on slow, slack line falls. A little bit large reel has a bigger spool, which helps with memory in the flouro a bit, and picks up a bit quicker. Quote
Super User MickD Posted October 4, 2017 Super User Posted October 4, 2017 I think for Neds a ML power is a better choice than the heavier powers. the Ned jig is so light it doesn't take much to move it, and with heavier powers I think it harder to detect when you're tight onto the jig on the bottom. I don't think the action is as important, but you want a tip that deflects quite easily. A light tip on an XF should work fine. The light wire hook on a Ned, and for many drop shot set-ups, don't need a lot of power to get a good hook set. You want best sensitivity you can get for best bite detection. I use 10 pound test braid with similar test FC leader. FC is probably better than mono to keep the Ned on the bottom better. Quote

That's a thing now. Totally agree. I have shimano crucial rate for dropshot M/XF 6'10 pair with symetre 2500 but I hardly use that setup anymore. With 1/4 oz dropshot weight I can cast with any of my baitcasting and get more accurate and acceptable distance. I don't throw a lot of Ned rig but if I want I still can do it with my baitcasting but with less distance. Last time I took my spinning setup out, it was a nightmare. I have to adjust a lot and can't find any accuracy at all. Quote
FrankN209 Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Pflueger Supreme with a Zodias rod works great.. Quote

I also run a Ned rig on my DX742 w/ Stradic CI4, but thats for the 1/10 size or bigger. As far as line I run 15lb powerpro on all my spinning setups, leader for Ned I use 7lb sniper. 6lb Yozuri Hybrid works well too 100-150 there are options, but save your money and find a Stradic or a Stradic CI4. If you are deadset on not going higher get the Daiwa Procyon EX that is on sale at TW right now... those reels are a freaking steal for what you get at that price. Quote
