BassB8Caster Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 Hey guys, i havent been out fishing in a while. Plan on fishing saturday and sunday this weekend. Curious how the fishing is here in Maine. Im seeing threads about summer/fall transition lulls. Im hoping the bite hasnt slowed. I fish mainly small ponds, so im sure they have cooled down a bit. I see saturday is going to have a high of 61. Im thinking fish should be active. I plan to target any green vegetation/lillies i can find. One pond i plan to fish is very shallow. maybe a deep spot of 10 feet. I plan to target the shorline, especially vegetation and any other cover i can find. How is everyone else doing? Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted September 29, 2017 Posted September 29, 2017 This past weekend the fishing was kind of tough... Not many bites. The few bites I did get though were quality fish. The biggest bass I got last weekend was 6 lbs 1 oz. That fish was in 1 foot of water. It was very hot though and I saw a water temperature of 82 degrees which is very warm for almost being October. I'm sure the temps have cooled a bit with the last couple of cooler nights and days. I wouldn't be surprised if they will be biting very well this weekend. It is time. What pond are you going to ? Perhaps I can show you a couple spots ? Quote
BassB8Caster Posted September 30, 2017 Author Posted September 30, 2017 Id take 6lbers anytime! I am going out both saturday and sunday. Tomorrow i was planning on fishing moose pond in west paris. I have been there once last year, i think it was. Didnt catch anything special. Was super windy that day. It's a pretty small pond (97 acres) that is shallow (10 feet max). Most of it is 8 to 10 deep. Obviously shallower at shoreline. I have heard there are decent fish in there. Im also considering Hutchinson pond in albany. Maps show some good humps and shallows with drop offs. May be decent. Also open to suggestion. Last place i went was bradley pond in stoneham. Caught a decent number. Nothing huge (3.5 biggest). Also caught a big brookie. Not sure if there are many big fish in there (i did lose one over 5 there earlier this summer). Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Good luck to you! Any big ones this year? Quote

BassB8Caster Posted October 3, 2017 Author Posted October 3, 2017 This weekend was a grind. i caught fish (nothing big) but i had to work for all of them. They just didnt seem to be where i expected them to be. This time of year i thought i would find them in and amongst the vegetation roaming and feeding. But i didnt really find that. They were very scattered. Almost like i had to drop it on their nose. Im guessing it was a brookie through process of elimination. I have caught brook trout all my life (all brooks and small ponds...biggest fish around 14 inches). This fish was 20 inches. Looked very different than any i have ever caught. Camera on my phone is broke, so i mentally made notes of distinguishing characteristics. Body was a uniform olive green with bright red spots. There were no halos around the spots (like browns would have). I do not recall the worm like markings on the back of a brookie. I also didnt look carefully at the tail (now i know how significant the tail can be for identification). After i caught it i thought it was a brown (as i had never caught one and this fish was so different), but figured with these characteristics i would be able to identify it looking online. I havent found any pictures that tell me "that was it". Just after talking with a few people, we kind of came to the brook trout conclusion. Was neat thats for sure. With few trips left, i really want to try to target big fish. Contemplating hitting up Kezar Lake again, or somewhere i may "luck into" a 6 plus pounder. My problem is, like i have stated before, fishing out of a kayak i dont want to have to paddle miles to get to places. My brother in law has a canoe (no motor just us paddling). Do you think its worth the trip out to Kezar Pond? Sounds like an interesting endeavor, and you said it can fish tough. Two of us paddling could make the distance in much quicker. Or better off launching at the narrows on kezar and going up (or down)? Quote
