Largemouth21 Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 I am going to replace hooks on rebel pop-r. It says on the website that the hooks are size 6 on the pop-r. I would replace them with VMC short shank round bend hooks. (like what come on Rapalas) will this change the action? VMC hooks Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 27, 2017 Super User Posted September 27, 2017 I replaced mine with Mustad KVD Triple Grip #4 Quote

IndianaFinesse Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Nope. Pop-rs aren't exactly super finely balanced, so a little more or less weight in the hooks isn't noticeable. 3 Quote

Super User Angry John Posted September 27, 2017 Super User Posted September 27, 2017 I would not use a short shank on a topwater bait. Normally i would recommend some sort of round bend but my best holding hook on poppers is the owner st-41. Everyone has a favorite but a good hook lasts a long time on a popper. Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 27, 2017 Super User Posted September 27, 2017 Replace the hooks by buying a Splash-It, it comes with Owner hooks and the rear treble is feathered. Yes, feathered rear treble hook helps a Pop-R type lure increase strikes. Owner, Gamakatsu, Mustad and VMC all make feathered treble hooks for a reason, they work. Tom 2 Quote
Attila Posted September 27, 2017 Posted September 27, 2017 Have to echo sentiments that you can't really change the action of a popper given that the pop comes from the design of the lure body itself. With regards to feathered trebles, I can attest that they do matter. I experimented a couple of years ago with a Rapala Skitter Pop, one with a feathered treble and another with a regular, undressed treble and the feathered version out fished the undressed treble 4:1. Next year I'm going to experiment with VMC X-Rap feathered trebles on the back of some of my Shadow Raps...will be interesting to see the results. Quote

Some of my Pop-Rs have feathers some don't! I'm mainly concerned with it sitting nose high, this allows for subtle or serious pops. The Little trick Zell Rowland showed me ? 3 Quote
Largemouth21 Posted September 28, 2017 Author Posted September 28, 2017 I'm also interested in the tiny popper, except that most companies don't make a size 8 treble. Will size 6 work or be to big. Some earlier posters said they put #4 trebles on the regular popper which calls for #6 so why not #6 on a #8? 1 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted September 28, 2017 Posted September 28, 2017 I agree about the importance of the nose sitting high and the tail low, it makes it easier to pop without moving it as far forward, in addition to have a better sound to it. I upsize the back hook enough to accomplish this, on the back I'll go either #4 or #2 (depending on the individual hook's weight) and the front gets a #6. 2 Quote

How it sits on the water is more important than what hook ya use! Ya don't want it nose down or even level 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 28, 2017 Super User Posted September 28, 2017 If want to educate yourself on Rebel Pop-R's read Zell Roland's articles in Bassmaster. Zell doesn't use out of the box Pop-R's unless it's his modified version. I remember in the 80's sanding the sides and lower lip of Rebel Pop-R so they spit instead of popped, changing the rear hook to chicken feathers in lieu of Mylar so we could work the lure faster to resemble fleeing Shad. We used Mustad treble hooks size 4 front and 6 rear back in the 80's. Today you can buy tuned Pop-R type lures made in Japan that work perfectly out of the box. Tom Quote
