So is braid bad for fishing reels and the rod guides? Thinking about diving into some braid as the memory of fluorocarbon is annoying.

When braid first came out many years ago, it caused issues. But that was resolved a long time ago. Today it will not damage your rods or reels.

As long as your guides have hard ceramic inserts and not the cheap metal ones they should be fine with braid. Vintage reels might have trouble with braid.

Good to know. I'm positive my equipment will handle it with ease then. Recommendations for braid line of choice?

What are fg knots?

A braid to leader connection knot. It's the thinnest knot you can tie but is notoriously frustrating to tie until you get really good at it.

power pro

+1 Power Pro. I've had it on my rods for over 8 years.

I like Hi-Vis Yellow.

Sunline FX2 if you want 50 or 60lb.  SX1 if you want lighter.

The guides on some manufacturers' rods can't handle braid-to-leader knots. They'll tear off of the rod on your first cast. I've never had any problems with Loomis, St Croix, Power Tackle, or Dobyns rods.

It's always good to check before you buy.

Please don't let this thread go down the FG knot road! :)

If you search the forum you'll find a TON of posts about braid.

Braid w/o leader, braid w/leader, brands, etc. It is a very popular

topic here.

Suffice it to say, my preference is braid+leader. I use Power Pro

regular in 10#(spinning) and 20#(on casting) and 15# Power Pro

Super Slick 8 on spinning. If I were to buy another spool today

I'd go for the SS8 again. I like it.

I've used several brands and just find PP best to my liking. Boils

down to personal preference, really. They all have positives and

negatives.

Just looking for clarification Mr. Brat as I've never heard of this before. Are you saying the leader connection knot will tear THE GUIDES right off of certain rods during the cast?

Yes. It's happened twice to me with the same line of rods. The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke, and I exchanged the rod for a new one. When it happened on the first cast with the second rod, I asked for a refund, and Tackle Warehouse was cool with it.

Some rods actually come with a warning not to pass a leader knot through the guides, but this particular rod didn't.

Wow, that's crazy. One more reason why I'm glad I'm a self-professed Loomis fanboy!

BTW - GO BEARS!!!!!! B)
