Wagster Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I'm looking for a nice rod and reel for throwing deep diving cranks up to 6XD. I Will also use it for chatterbaits. I was looking at the mislabeled Dobyns 736CB but I'm not a cranking expert so I would like some recommendations. Thanks, Billy Quote
CroakHunter Posted September 24, 2017 Posted September 24, 2017 I use a 7'5 mh cabelas tournament zx cranking rod. Nice budget rod. 1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 That 736 would be a bit small, but it'll do fine. You could also check out the Fritts CB rod, there's a 7'11 Heavy. As far as reels, anything 5:1. I know people say you don't need 5:1s anymore, but there is so much resistance on that bait. Check out this 806cb though, it's a good deal: http://dobynsrods.com/store/#!/139-Refurbished-DC-805CB-Glass-XP/p/84270573/category=14031090 1 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I don't personally see the same return on investment in a $300+ cranking rod as I do, say, jig, worm, or finesse bait rods. My cranking rods are both Veritas rods and I like them quite a bit for the purpose (despite not loving foam grips). I have a 7'6" MH gen 2.0 paired with a Revo winch that rocks for getting bigger crankbaits down, throws them a mile, and still gives a great feel for the bottom. The only cranks I have that I really haven't thrown on it comfortably are the giant 10XDs, but they also aren't something I fish all too often. 1 Quote
illinifan4152 Posted September 25, 2017 Posted September 25, 2017 I would reccomend a dobyns champion 765cb or 805cb. Glass vs graphite will be your preference. And I would get a shimano curado in the 6.3 gear ratio. Holds lots of line being a 200 size and 6.3 is a good speed for all moving Baits in my opinion. Solid combo here. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted September 25, 2017 Super User Posted September 25, 2017 " I will also use it for chatterbaits." If that's the case, the 736CB is a great compromise as a duel purpose rod. The miss marked rods are a heck of a value. I bought mine for chatterbaits and love it but I would throw DD22's or 5-6XD's in a heart beat with it. The 805CB as a dedicated stick would be best but you are looking for a duel purpose rod. Quote
Super User Angry John Posted September 26, 2017 Super User Posted September 26, 2017 I have and use a dobyns champion 764 rm for most of my cranking and like it a lot for what you mention up to the 6xd. I would step up the 805rm for dd22 and 8xd baits. Never thrown a 10xd so i cant comment there. Quote
