What sort of budget boat should I be looking for?

Hi all!

 

I'm a relatively new angler (really only got invested in the spring).  I'm interested in picking up a boat to expand the areas I can fish.  I live on the Mississippi river, so there's a lot of backwater options in addition to several no-wake lakes.  As far as type of fishing, I primarily am after bass.

 

My budget is under $1,000, and I'm really hoping to pick something up for a lot less than that. Obviously, I'm most likely going to be shopping craigslist and such for something very used, so I'm hoping to catch a deal as we approach the end of the season.

 

Here's my question: It's just me most of the time, though I do occasionally take a friend or two along.  Assuming I plan for just me (capacity for 2 being a bonus), and assuming that I would at least like a trolling motor (yea, I know, I'm lazy), what would you recommend?  I'm thinking I might want the ability to stand up (sitting for hours sounds like it would drive me crazy), but I'm flexible on that.

 

Suggestions for things to look for as I hunt used equipment?

It sounds like a Jon boat would fit the bill but I have seen deals on Craigslist that might allow you to get more boat for the money, but 1000.00 doesn't give you much room.

 

I have seen some used kayaks that are bug enough to stand on.

Sorry to say you are going to be hard pressed to find something in your price range.  Look on CL for a Jon and a good trolling motor.  You may be able to find a PVC style (Pelican, Bass Hunter, etc) in your budget.

I've been in your situation - it's good that you're not looking for a gas motor as "very used" gas motors may cost less than $1,000 originally but will cost you frequently for repairs.

 

If you have a truck, I'd buy a 12' flat bottomed jon boat (Academy $649) and a $99 new trolling motor.  Budget another $100 for a new deep cycled battery.  Should come in at around $900 and last forever.  Don't forget to budget for legally necessary items.    

 

HOWEVER, I honestly think a good sit on top kayak would be a better investment.  Easier to put in the water, zero maintenance, and still very useful if you end up buying a bonafide bass boat three years from now.  I learned that lesson the hard way - wanna travel to Louisville and buy my $500 v-hull that never gets used?

I should think u could find a Jon boat and trolling motor for under a grand.  I see them on my local Craigslist quite frequently.  I prefer a Jon boat with a trolling motor over a kayak.  I know kayaks are super popular these days but they're not for me.  I need the room to move around to really enjoy my time on the water.  Do you have a tow vehicle for a boat?  If you feel comfortable telling me what area you're in I would gladly look through the local Craigslist for suggestions.
