Guest kosta Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Why does everyone recommend green pumpkin or black/blue jigs?. Since a jig is supposed to imitate a craw shouldn't it be red? I noticed alot of manufacterers dont even make red jigs and trailers and since I already have a ton of green pumpkin jigs I dont want to waste more money on jigs before i get some input Quote

Yep.... especially if the bass in your like like them cooked.....sorry to be a dilrod...but live craws can be found in a huge spectrum of colors in most any water at any time of the year....some times of the year, your lake might have a lot more red than other colors, but fact is, jigs in most any color will work most any time...except when they don't....try red...tie your own...use some jj's or spike it....see for yourelf if it works better than green/brown/blue/black. I keep it simple...most of the time 1 Quote

I keep it simple...most of the time Yes, I thought craws or crays would be more on the brown and red side. I was surprised to find my first one going down the Suwannee river. It was blue, a very bright blue at that. I paid more attention on subsequent trips, finding they ranged in colors depending on time of year, water temp, and molt stage. Seen them in blues, browns, reds, olives, and even oranges. See what you've got around you and go from there. 2 Quote

Super User fishballer06 Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 No red crawfish around these parts... Most are a green pumpkin/brown color, with orange or grey highlights. Quote
Turtle135 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I am willing to bet that most of the jig bass I caught this summer were actually hunting bluegills and green sunfish. Despite my repeated attempts to interrogate them at boat side they would not admit so. Probably were too embarrassed to admit they had been fooled. If you feel some red will generate more bites just stick a red trailer on your jig. Trailers and skirts do not need to match. A green pumpkin skirt with a black/blue trailer caught my largest bass of the season. 2 Quote
npl_texas Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 It's also important to note they don't just imitate crayfish. They can also imitate bluegill, shad, etc. 3 Quote
BuzzHudson19c Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 I don't think I've ever seen a red crayfish up here. Even when they molt they don't get too bright. I am a neophyte when it comes to fishing jigs, but I have noticed that color doesn't seem to be a big deal. Well, not as big a deal as everyone makes it anyway. 1 Quote
bassguytom Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 The crawfish around me must be PB&J. My most productive by far this year. 1 Quote
Basseditor Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 I’ve seen molting crayfish in an opaque or almost translucent too. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted September 21, 2017 Super User Posted September 21, 2017 Most of the ones I've seen are dark brown. But a lot of time my jig color choices are imitating bluegill, or if I'm fishing muddy water I'll go straight black. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 21, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 21, 2017 Black and red is a good jig color for me when the water is cold or muddy. I fish a bright blue jig a lot, never seen a blue craw though. Then again I've never seen any prey items in a lot of productive lure colors. Quote

Still I think i'll buy some red jigs and trailers and see how that works. Thanks for all the responses Quote
drew4779 Posted September 21, 2017 Posted September 21, 2017 90% of the time I use black/black. If I'm adding color, I usually just change the trailer. I tend fish jigs deep and I was once told black stands out best on the bottom, especially in the stained water in my area. I do try to match forage on swim jigs though. Quote

MDbassin Posted September 23, 2017 Posted September 23, 2017 We have several species here in ND and after checking out that one link. Now I know why a black and blue jig with the strike king rage craw in falcon lake craw color work so well... It looks exactly like one of the species we have Quote
