Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 I only have the WP 90 size so far. I have had success with it using a Medium Heavy casting rod and a baitcaster spooled with 12 to 14 lb mono. I am thinking about getting the other 2 sizes. I am curious what rods and lines you guys are using for the various sized WP's? Quote
CroakHunter Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I have never fished a wp, and never will. But if say 14-20lb mono and 40-65lb braid. Not sure what the 110 and 130 weigh, but as long as you stay in your rods ratings you'll be fine. Quote
DSTN Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I've used 12-15 lb mono and 15-50 lb braid for my WP 90s. Basically have thrown the 90s on any/all of my medium and med. heavy set ups. My 130 I've thrown using 14-15 lb mono and 50 lb braid. More often with 50 lb braid since I feel like I have better control after a long cast. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 20 lb direct tie braid Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 I pretty much exclusively fish the 130 and I use a 7'2" MHR Tatula rod with 30 or 40lb braid. Ideally I'd use a longer slightly more parabolic rod to keep fish from shaking it out of their mouths when they jump but for what I have that's the best I can do right now. Quote
Super User tcbass Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 I use the same rod for everything, a Cabelas casting frog rod which is heavy and made to be used with 1/4 to 1-1/4 ounce lures, #17-30lbs. line, and fast tip. I own the 90, 110, and 130 but I only use the 90 and 110. I don't throw the 130 because it's so dang big it's like throwing a musky lure. I stopped using it. No point in throwing that if the 110 and 90 are working. I always start with the 110 and only use the 90 when there are weeds that are near the surface that the 110 will catch when it lands. If you have a heavy enough spinning rod you could throw the 90 but I'd use baitcasting for the 110 or bigger. Quote
Dtrombly Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I used a flipping stick for the 130, 7'6" Heavy, extremely stiff rod. Definitely was not ideal, IMO a swimbait rod fits the bill for the 130/190 sizes Quote
Ksam1234 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 MH st croix mojo boss for every plopper just adjust brakes as needed. And I tie 30 # braid. I always use braid for everything. Between 15-30# braid Quote

I use this same rod and same line. I think it's perfect for the 110. Quote

It's funny how different fisherman see things differently as I don't consider the 130 to be a big lure at all , I recently had one of my best days in a long while fishing for largemouths in SW Michigan with my best 5 weighing about 22 lbs which is a very nice stringer for my area anchored with a 6lber & 4lber . If it's not too big for our fish I 'm sure it will catch fish anywhere in the country . That said I also throw large swimbaits at times and when you see a 3lb bass choke down an 8" Hudd it changes your perspective on what a large fishing lure is to a bass especially largemouth . 1 Quote

Yeah, definitely not out throwing 8" Hudds or umbrella rigs. lol. I heard throwing umbrella rigs all day gets tiring also. Quote
Primus Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 It all comes down to the tackle you use, I have not admitedly fished an A-rig very much but have no problem throwing it with my Dobyns 795 swimbait rod . That said I would imagine it would be quite a chore with conventional tackle . Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted September 20, 2017 Super User Posted September 20, 2017 I fish 90 sized Whopper Ploppers from nearly any of my M/F rods (Abu, Diawa, Kistler, Fenwick, and St. Croix) with 7.x or 6.x:1 gear ratio (translated: almost whatever rod I have in my hand when I decide to toss Ploppers). I've tried fluoro and braid and chose braid because I found myself having to hold my rod at 10-11 O'Clock a lot to keep the Whopper Plopper from nosediving with fluoro. 1 Quote
jonkevin Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I throw the 110 on a GLoomis E6X MHF with 40# Power Pro and the 90 on a Fenwick Silverhawk II MF with 12# Pline CXX. Quote
Brett's_daddy Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I fish my 90's on MH/F spinning rods...1 is a 7ft. Fenwick HMG and the other is a Tour KVD 7'4". Both rods have 30lb Power Pro braid on them and I tie direct to the lure. For my 130's I use a 7'5" iRod Fiber H/F casting rod with 50lb Sunline FX2 braid. Quote
RB 77 Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I fish the 130 on 25 lb test on my 7'11" Crucial Swimbait rod. Quote
38 Super Fan Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I only have 110s, and I throw those on either a 7' MH or Heavy and always with braid. I don't like a rod that's too long with the WP, it can make getting around those tighter places difficult. Braid because it allows for better hooksets on those long bomb casts you can make. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 21, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 21, 2017 90 and 110 I fish on a 7' M/F baitcaster with 20lb braid, no leader 130 goes on a 7' 3" H/F 50lb braid, no leader Quote
Super User Koz Posted September 21, 2017 Super User Posted September 21, 2017 I have fished with the 90,110, 1nd 130 on my Ugly Stick MH fast action and caught a lot of fish. However, your choice of line is key. I have only one rod so I don't have the luxury of matching lures to line and that has been problematic. I've had the line snap using the 110 with 12lb mono. I've had the line snap using the 130 and 16lb fluoro. Snapping off the 110 was a surprise, but using the 130 on stretchy line was my fault. No line snaps with the 90, although I once hung it in a tree hanging over the water. It's amazing how far those Whopper Ploppers will fly when the line breaks. So now I use either 40 or 50 pound braid. While not ideal for all lures I do like to throw the WP, a frog, and a few other heavier lures so I make do with that one my one reel. Next year I'll have to invest in a second rod and reel. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 21, 2017 Super User Posted September 21, 2017 For the 130, I'm using the new Okuma EVX-CB-701MHb cranking stick. The reel is spooled with 15# Seaguar Rippin' mono. Quote

For WP90 I use a 7' MH spinning rod and a 4000 series spinning reel with a 100 yrds of 20 lb. PP braid (mono backing) ... I can cast like 65 yards across open flats with this rig ... *Be mindful of good spinning reel line management techniques after each cast or that 65 yrd cast just turned into a 75+ yard cast which you will NOT be geting back !! PatrickKnight Posted October 7, 2017 Posted October 7, 2017 I keep a 90 in perch color in my river bag and when the smallies start hitting on top I will throw it on a medium power spinning rod with 15 lb direct braid. Quote
