mcfishing620 Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I have an Elite 9ti and was fishing about 6 feet of water and anchored, and soon as the boat would stop, side imaging would just make everything on the screen look like streaks. I assume that's normal since it's continuously pinging the same thing, but how do you see fish and shad move in? We rely heavily on this feature when wiper fishing, and it works perfectly when moving, even very slightly. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 Correct, you must be moving a few mph for the SI to correctly render. Once I'm stationary, I switch to traditional sonar, usually on the hybrid setting, and focus on the RTS bar on the right, like I would watch an old flasher. Quote
mcfishing620 Posted September 14, 2017 Author Posted September 14, 2017 So I was trying to figure out how real-time fish could be seen on side find. It's a lot harder bc everything is already streaking, but fish coming in would just be new white streaks contrasting the rest, right? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 It's gonna be hard to tell at all. You won't have any target separation. The whole SI/DI tech was designed to work with boat movement. There is new tech, like Humminbird's 360° scan, or Garmin's forward scan that would work when you are stationary. That's just the limitation of SI/DI. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 I do a split screen of Down Imaging and 2D Sonar if I stop. But I rarely stop completely unless working a bed. Quote
mcfishing620 Posted September 14, 2017 Author Posted September 14, 2017 I anchor with my Xi5 a lot to fish schools of wiper (striper/white bass hybrid) when they are feeding on shad. I move until I see fish on SI, then once we start catching them, we anchor until they quit biting (move out of range). Normally I run a 3 screen view, with sonar and DI as my smaller screens on top and SI on the full wide bottom half of the screen. But when we are searching for the fish, I use SI full screen. A little bit of wind helps bc it will push the boat around side to side, which keeps the SI working good. I think to help cause this, I'm gonna start trimming my motor completely out of the water so it doesn't act like a rudder. Quote
Sprocket Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 If you're fishing schools, you definitely need Panoptix. You can watch how the school reacts to your lures, watch when the school moves and if not surfacing it will tell you how far from the boat they are and how deep they are. All in real time. Side Scan you need to be moving to display the proper image. If you think about it, your sitting still so the beam is just hitting the same spot and will slowly just scroll across your screen. A object on the bottom is not moving so its going to stretch it across your screen. As far as seeing fish on your screen, moving wipers will look like spaghetti noodles the will be stretch out because they will be moving. This is a screen shot of stripers chasing bait. You can see how they look on down imaging. Nice. Where is this at? I'll post a few pictures of shad and wiper I got the other day. Your settings are clean too. What's all your stuff set to? You have excellent contrast and looks pretty clean. Quote
