GoneFishingLTN Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 Is there really a time of year where these are just not that good Quote
RichF Posted September 13, 2017 Posted September 13, 2017 My favorite techniques, but I don't catch a lot in early spring (prespawn) with them. That's really the only time I'm tossing moving baits over flipping and pitching. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 During the hard water season is when they are least effective. 4 Quote

GoneFishingLTN Posted September 13, 2017 Author Posted September 13, 2017 Why would it depend? Don't they always relate to structure? I live in Iowa Quote

I live in Iowa Of course they relate to structure. However, you're referring to a technique for overcoming COVER. In winter and early spring, you're going to do to well when it's either frozen over or the weeds haven't come in yet. In southern climates, this doesn't occur, and there's cover year round. 2 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted September 13, 2017 Super User Posted September 13, 2017 Always, man. Reading structure and cover, and how and why they all relate to fish location and how you fish seems like the biggest hurdle. 4 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 14, 2017 Global Moderator Posted September 14, 2017 I don't flip or punch much late fall through mid spring. We just don't have a lot of heavy cover to do it in until the water willows start growing in late spring to early summer. Quote
SWVABass Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Pitching to wood in the fall has worked out well for me. Outside of prespawn, for whatever reason it's the only other time I've caught fish off wood. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted September 14, 2017 Super User Posted September 14, 2017 Almost always have a pitching rod on deck ... it's usually good for a bite or two too....love using those strike king bugs too that Glenn got me started on!!! Quote
bagofdonuts Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Funny down here my favorite time to flip/pitch is prespawn when they're in the backwater holding tight to wood. Fall is probably when I use it the least. Not because it won't work, but i just can't pry the spinnerbait outa my hands. Quote
Tw3ak Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 You know a lot has been said about flipping pitching and punching my two cents is I can't wait for my first 10ft flipping rod actually I might actually make a 14-footer since I don't fish tournaments anymore I can flip so quietly I'm very good at pitching and punching but there are times when I'm flipping when it is so critical to be quiet flipping not pitching is the only way to go I'm not talking just about lure entry into the water I'm also talking about boat noise I won't use a trolling motor I Pole around quietly I wear camouflage and sneak around I've got some real monsters doing this Florida has many Clearwater ponds and Pitt's in the Fisher real skittish some days it doesn't matter you can pitch and be just fine but when the water is slick and the sky is high Bluebird days these big bass can be super skittish that's when I want a flipping stick I also like the sixteen thread Hollow braid because it doesn't make noise sliding through the grass and the Reeds won't cut it off we have Reed's here 12 or 15 feet above the water and pockets of water way back inside where they spawn I can reach those with that super long flip stick so just call me or Tule Dipper right there with mr.
